About this Cook
Well I have been in the kitchen from the tender age of 4. Watching and helping my mother and grandmother cook. I made my first full meal at the age of 8. Just spaghetti & meatballs with my mother's recipe for homemade sauce, fresh homemade bread and a salad. A very basic meal but I was very proud and my family was impressed. Of course my mother was in the kitchen with me to supervise so I would not hurt myself but for the most part - I did all the work. As the years rolled on - my cooking skills have vastly improved. I can basically make almost anything and I love to try making new things.
My favorite things to cook
My favorite things to cook - that is kinda hard but I would have to say Soul Food. We have a lot of family recipes and traditions that have been handed down through the generations. I also love to cook Italian Cuisine, Spanish Cuisine and seafood.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Well - as my mother is getting on in years - she avoids the kitchen at all costs having always cooked for years for all of us (My father & sisters). I have taken on the task of cooking Thanksgiving Dinner. It is a very basic meal but a lot of work. I prepare all side dishes and of course the guest of honor. My friends and other family members bring dessert. I really don't mind it though - I really do love to cook! Oh and Sunday Dinner (you never know what I will whip up !)
My cooking triumphs
Well everybody always raves about my Macaroni and Cheese (something so simple to make) I have given the recipe to friends and they always tell me "Dee - I just can't get it to taste like yours!" Also - I love to make hors d'oeuvres. Favorite one requested over and over again are my mushroom turnovers (dubbed by family and friends - the "mushroom thingys")I love them too - but since I make the dough from scratch it is a little time consuming and if I am going to make them - I usually prepare the dough 1 day in advance - from there it is easy street.
My cooking tragedies
Well I attempted to make a sweet potato casserole using a sugar substitute. Let me tell you - I was not pleased with the taste and had to scrap the whole thing - Unfortunately I had guests arriving for Sunday Dinner in 2 hours - so I ran to the store - got canned sweet potatoes and doctored them up. One of my closest friends pulled me to the side after dinner and said "Dee those are not your sweet potatoes" So I fessed up and told them of my mishap with the casserole I was planning to serve.

Yummy Cheese Ball
Kelli - thanks for a wonderful recipe. This went over very big at my dinner party last night. I did make a few twists on it to make it my own. Very finely chopped scallions and fresh chives. I also added in about 1/2 cup of shredded mild cheddar cheese and I put my pecans in my food processor to make them smaller. When I rolled my perfectly round cheese ball in the crushed pecans it really looked fabulous. I topped the ball with remaining scallions. Oh good tip for any of you that have G. Foreman Grills - cooks your bacon in half the time and drains off alot of the fat & grease. To crumble your bacon nicely, break it up and put it in a zip lock bag and crush up with a rolling pin.

Simple Syrup
Simple and easy! I use this in a lot of my cocktails that I make when entertaining. Keeps really well in the fridge too.

Linguine with White Clam Sauce II
Very easy to make and delicious. Just to take the bite out of the clam (which can be a little fishy) I squeezed 1/2 of a lemon into the sauce after letting it simmer for 10 minutes. I actually made this 3 times already and I have gotten raves. A good recipe to have when you want to make a quick, light dinner.
