Daisy Brand Sour Cream Chocolate Cake

Reviewed: Jan. 7, 2014
This was one of the best cakes I have ever made. Maybe I haven't looked hard enough, but I have never found a cake recipe that I like better than a cake-mix cake...until today. I followed the recipe exactly, except I omitted the chocolate frosting and made a cream cheese one instead (my husband's request- it was his birthday so I had to!). The cake was moist, and the flavor was outstanding. I did not have two 8 inch cake pans so I used 9 inch pans instead and cooked it for 25 minutes. It was great! The cream cheese frosting complemented the chocolate cake nicely, though next time I will definitely try the frosting as written because if it is anywhere near as good as the cake I'm sure I will love it!

Holiday Cranberry Sauce

Reviewed: Nov. 23, 2013
I followed the directions exactly and it came out all watery, even after cooking until the berries began to burst and keeping it for 20 hours in the fridge. (maybe I should have boiled it longer?) I assume I must have done something wrong because everyone else seems to have had success, but I am usually very anal about directions and exact measurements so I don't know where I went wrong. I wanted to post this to hopefully help others as I thought this was a no-fail recipe and it unfortunately failed me. So if you are planning this for a big dinner, maybe make a practice batch first so you know it comes out ok. I wish I had!

Mini Cheesecakes from PHILADELPHIA®

Reviewed: Apr. 5, 2013
These are absolutely delicious, and easy to make. Everyone was raving about them when I brought them to a party. They make 18 cupcake-sized cheesecakes- a great serving size. I topped some with whipped cream and blueberries, and drizzled others with melted chocolate- but honestly, my favorites were the plain ones!

Valentine's Day Strawberry Muffins

Reviewed: Feb. 14, 2013
I made these for the family for Valentine's Day. I followed the recipe exactly, including the chocolate chips. I thought they were ok. They were a bit bland- the sugar flavor predominates, not the strawberry or even lemon flavor, and the texture was a little weird (almost rubbery?). My kids were not big fans, which surprised me because I thought they would like them best of all. I know that strawberries are difficult to bake with, so maybe that was part of it. Anyway, it is clear that other people liked this recipe very much so perhaps it is just that my preference is different, but I will look elsewhere next time. Thanks anyway!

Chicken Pot Pie Soup

Reviewed: Nov. 15, 2012
I had tried a much more complicated version of Chicken Pot Pie soup a few weeks ago (everything from scratch!) and this was so much better! My 6 and 8 year old both said they much prefer this recipe and ate a whole bowl each. I love that it was so simple and quick! I boiled chicken in water with chicken bouillon to cook it prior to cutting it up for the soup; when I made the soup I added a little bit of the chicken-cooking broth to it to make it a little less thick. (simply a texture preference- the recipe is great as-is!). Thanks for sharing!

Mini Meatloaves

Reviewed: Feb. 14, 2012
This was delicious and simple to make. I followed the recipe exactly except I used heart-shaped muffin tins for Valentine's Day meatloaf. My family loved it! Thanks for a great recipe.

Iced Pumpkin Cookies

Reviewed: Oct. 17, 2011
So amazing! Followed the recipe exactly and loved it! My 7 year old said they are her new favorite. The cookie alone is not too sweet, just a great blend of pumpkin and spice. The icing makes it a real treat- I didn't add any extra milk beyond the 3T and it was thick but smooth. Fantastic recipe- thank you!

Oven Beef Stew

Reviewed: Mar. 21, 2011
This has to be the best beef stew I have ever had. Don't be fooled by how basic the recipe appears- it is delicious! I double it to feed 4 people, except I used only one can of tomato soup. I added an extra cup of water and a beef bouillon packet and approx 1 cup of frozen corn. Like other reviewers, I added all veggies at once and it was perfect. My four year old asked me to "please make this soup every day!". Thanks for a great recipe!

Award Winning Soft Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: Feb. 15, 2011
I know I am in the minority here, but I did not think these were all that fantastic. I much prefer the Toll House chocolate chip cookie recipe. I thought these were a little too sweet, and by the next day they were hard (despite being covered tightly overnight). Just my opinion- there is certainly nothing wrong with the recipe, they are just not my preference. Thanks!

Mall Pretzels

Reviewed: Feb. 15, 2011
These are fantastic! I have made them many times using only all purpose flour because I had no bread flour. This time I replaced 2 tsp of the all purpose flour with 2 tsp wheat gluten and I found the dough much easier to work with. That, and letting it rest after the initial roll-out as suggested by the Editor's note were key. Thanks for a great recipe!

Chocolate Truffle Cookies

Reviewed: Feb. 8, 2011
These are unbelievable! If you like chocolate, you will love these. I am very grateful to the reviewer who recommended dipping your hands in cold water (and keeping them wet) when handling the dough- makes things much easier! My only other comment is to keep the cookies small because they are so rich, and make sure you use parchment paper when cooking. This recipe is outstanding- thank you so much!

Blueberry Muffins

Reviewed: Apr. 4, 2010
A very good blueberry muffin recipe! Slightly more dry than other recipes I've made but still delicious. A few tips: one fresh squeezed lemon provided the 1/4c of lemon juice I needed; if you are using wild blueberries (the smaller ones) then 1c is fine, but if using regular blueberries I would increase the amount to 1 1/2c or even 2c. And if the berries are frozen, run them under cool water in a strainer to thaw prior to using. Also, definitely HEAVILY sprinkle the tops with sugar prior to baking- it adds so much! Thank you for a wonderful recipe.

Bunny Cookies

Reviewed: Mar. 29, 2010
This was a nice change from the usual sugar cookie recipe! I made it exactly as directed, with the exception of lemon zest instead of orange (it was all I had). The orange juice gave a pleasant but not overpowering flavor, which is what sets it apart. It is also very convenient in that the dough does not need to be chilled. The dough appeared dry in the mixing bowl, but then when I picked it up and squished it together it was able to roll out nicely (you have to be more careful with the cutout shapes though because they are more likely to fall apart than ones made from other doughs). We weren't big fans of the RedHots though- they just don't seem to go well with sugar cookies. And these cookies definitely taste better frosted! Thank you for the recipe- I will definitely make them again.

Quick Coffee Cake

Reviewed: Dec. 5, 2009
A great, simple coffee cake. I made it exactly as listed with the exception of substituting margarine for shortening and it was moist and delicious. It's true the cake itself isn't super-sweet but the topping makes up for that. I think the key to it coming out well is following the instructions as listed and not over-mixing. This is a great cake to throw together on a whim without having to buy any special ingredients. Thanks for posting it!

Beef Stew IV

Reviewed: Oct. 20, 2008
I don't think anyone could possibly screw up this recipe. A great base that you can spice up as much as you want. I used leftover pot roast instead of stew beef. Started by adding onion, garlic and celery to canola oil in pan, then once those were softened, added the chopped up pot roast that I had tossed in flour. Used beef broth instead of water. Continued as directed after that, but as suggested by other reviewers added a tablespoon each of chili sauce, ketchup, and a teaspoon of sugar. Also added about a cup of leftover gravy. Because I used pot roast, the meat fell apart in the stew which I think makes it taste better! But I think you could do just about anything to this wonderful basic recipe and it would taste great. Thanks for posting it!

Lower Fat Banana Bread II

Reviewed: Oct. 8, 2008
A fantastic recipe whether or not you care about the "lower fat" designation. And if you don't mind the extra fat, this is great with a cup of chocolate chips added as others have mentioned (try it! really!). For those of you with convection ovens, I found my bread came out best when I baked it at 315 degrees for 50 minutes. And a final note- I used 3 bananas with great results. Thanks so much for an awesome recipe!

Apple Cake VII

Reviewed: Oct. 11, 2007
I just made this and was pleased with the result. I always like to follow a recipe precisely as listed the first time I make it, so I did shred all of the apples. I wish I had chopped half of them instead- the shredded ones kind of melt into the cake (maybe a firmer apple would have worked better? I used Macouns). Also, I think you definitely need to drain the apples- after reading the last review, I did drain mine and the cake was still super moist. The flavor was great and everyone loved it- I dusted it with confectioner's sugar but agree that a caramel icing would be ideal. A great fall treat!

Downeast Maine Pumpkin Bread

Reviewed: Sep. 15, 2007
This is a recipe that you will make again and again. It freezes well too- just wrap in plastic wrap, then foil and stick in the freezer- will last for months. Just defrost on the counter overnight and the next morning it tastes like it was just baked. Great with coffee! The recipe is great alone, but I've also added a cup of raisins- if you are a raisin fan, it adds a nice touch. Thanks for posting this!

Basic Chicken Salad

Reviewed: May 10, 2007
Fantastic! Even my 3 year old loved this recipe. I marinated chicken breasts in an "Island Teriyaki" marinade (store-bought) and grilled them- the sweetness of the teriyaki definitely added great flavor, but this recipe would be tasty with any type of chicken! The toasted almonds are the key. Thanks so much for sharing it.
