Chocolate Syrup

Reviewed: May 23, 2012
Today was my first time making this syrup and I wish I'd read some of the reviews first, like I normaly do. Oh well...I too had to simmer the syrup for about 20 min. before it showed any signs of thickening. Any ideas as to how to thicken it without boiling it forever and being able to use it the same evening or is it a must to leave in fridge overnight? I'd appreciate any help as hubby's a huge chocolate user. (He's not huge, just his taste for chocolate sauce:)

Turkish Kebabs

Reviewed: Jul. 24, 2011
Very very tastey! I've had many many donar or as the Greeks say, gyros, and it's hard to find a great donar in Canada but I'll be making this over and over again. Our western kebabs are what the first comment describes but that's not the Turkish recipes. I also add tomato, red onion slices, and lettuce with the meat in the pita. Thanks RACHEY for this recipe!

Layered Seafood Dip

Reviewed: Dec. 5, 2010
I was looking for recipe ideas for over the Christmas holidays and when I saw this recipe which I've made many times over the years and will be again this coming holiday, I have to rate it as it's such a big, no, HUGE hit with our family. No changes made either, fantastic just as is. Our grown sons would be upset if I changed anything.

Absolutely Awesome BBQ Sauce

Reviewed: Dec. 29, 2009
The name says it all and then some! I made it last nite for a back rib dinner. It's one of our fav foods. Well I can tell you that we don't want any other sauce, bought or homemade. One of our sons always had to have Bulls Eye, but no more. Next time I'll try it on chicken breasts and meatballs. Thanks Joel for a fabulous recipe!!!

Easy Baklava

Reviewed: Oct. 25, 2009
This recipe has way to little syrup. Baklava is always better the next day for flavour but this one is dry. I found baklava II on this site and it has double the syrup, same great flavour, my family wants no other recipe. A nice touch is to add a cinnamon stick to the syrup which I make before starting to make the cake, cool syrup slowly poured on the hot cake so it soaks in is best and the next day it's not soggy, hard to imagine, but just nice and syrupy. Sorry I can't give this more stars. None of us likes a dry baklava.

Beer Butt Chicken

Reviewed: Oct. 13, 2009
I tried this on the weekend for the first time and we and our company LOVED it, better than the roasted-nicely browned chickens I had in the oven. The only change I made was that I only used 1/2 cup butter in total and 2 fresh garlic cloves in each of the places called for. YUMMY is all I can say! It smelled soooo good every time I went out to the bbq! Thanks for a very delish recipe, I'll be making this again and again.

Baklava II

Reviewed: Oct. 10, 2009
Thanks so much for a great recipe! No Greek restaurant has yet come close, where we live at least, even if they say it's made there by Greeks, it's not nearly as good. This comes so close to what we had in Turkey! So tasty and syrupy! An added note...I made it for Thanksgiving, or so I thought, but the pan is empty! Just in case you don't have unsalted butter or almonds as I didn't, no one noticed that I used salted butter and walnuts which I normaly do. My one son and husband couldn't get enough of it. I'd give it more stars if possible. Thanks to Stephanie suggesting the dough can be partially frozen, I'll try that next time.

Peppy's Pita Bread

Reviewed: May 23, 2009
Thankyou Sandy for a GREAT recipe, my family made me promise never to buy pita bread again, only this recipe. Altho I will try a whole wheat recipe or sub the flour in this with whole wheat. They were better than expected! Made Greek burgers with Tzatziki sauce and stuffed with tomatoes and onions, better than any I've had away from the middle east.

Spinach Dip I

Reviewed: May 12, 2009
This recipe is close, but not quite complete, to a recipe that circulated for years. It also had added to it one bunch of green onions, one can of water chestnuts, drained, and it called for Knorr veg soup mix as others have suggested.

Greek Salad I

Reviewed: May 2, 2009
We all LOVE greek salad in my family, extended included. I've been making it for almost 30 years, saw a Greek chef making it, no measurements...some of this and some of that, same as this recipe as far as ingreds. go. The only thing different she added was red wine vinegar but also fresh lemon juice. NOT green olives or sugar! Thanks for posting a great recipe!

Apple Crisp IV

Reviewed: Sep. 18, 2008
I've tried many different apple crisp recipes but never seen one with a double crust. Altho this is good, it's too much like an apple square because of that...will make it again with other fruit tho, as a square. Thanks for the recipe.

Chocolate Caramel Nut Cake

Reviewed: Aug. 15, 2007
This is sooo good, my husband and son loved it too. But, I didn't get that gooey center I expected and I measured carefully. Next time I'll try the bought caramel sauce, it's thicker, this didn't stay on top, maybe that's the problem. Will definitely make again and try it with the snickers bars too.

Chocolate Earthquake Cake I

Reviewed: Aug. 13, 2007
I was waiting for my husband in a book store when I caught sight of a German cookbook. I flipped through it and found this recipe in the dessert section...there it was simply called German Chocolate Cake. I didn't buy the book but wrote out the recipe, bought the ingredients and made it for my family that weekend. It was and always has been a hit! The only thing is the men in the family don't like coconut so I leave it out and increase the pecans a little and 31/2 cups of icing sugar seems perfect, to each their own. I've been asked for this recipe when I've brought it to pot lucks or served to friends. Yummy!!

Easy Mexican Casserole

Reviewed: Jan. 2, 2007
Thanks for this great recipe. I made it for New Years eve at our house with 4 couples. It was a big hit even tho I served the sour cream on the side and mixed refried beans into the hamb mixture instead of kidney beans as I know one of our friends doesn't like them. Our sons say it's a keeper recipe for sure too!! I served the chips on the side as well. Thanks again.

Yummy Potato Skins

Reviewed: Aug. 7, 2006
This is much blander than thought it would be with the Italian dressing. The recipes for baked skins crisp, then topped with cheese and bacon bits are a lot tastier. And don't forget the sour cream...can't be on a diet with this one tho.

Lemon Poke Cake II

Reviewed: Jul. 31, 2006
I made this cake for a big gathering this weekend. Maybe the recipe is missing something, I covered it with whipped cream as the appearance of all the holes poked into the cake didn't look very nice. It wasn't a big hit altho I LOVE lemon almost anything. Not sure if I'll make it again as there better lemon recipes. It was easy enough tho so maybe for a quick fix I might.

Elvis Presley Cake

Reviewed: Jul. 31, 2006
Like other reviewers I found that there's not enough pineapple and way too much sugar,as well as too much icing, so, I adapted this recipe by using a 19 oz can of pineapple, 1 cup sugar, then used about 2/3 of the icing. very good icing...I've used this icing recipe (without the nuts) for years for various cakes. yummm! I'd give this recipe 3 stars but must give it 4 plus with the changes. Next time I'll try it by thickening the pineapple with cornstartch, no sugar added, see what happens. It was still too sweet, sorry.

Awesome Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting

Reviewed: Jul. 17, 2006
The cake is very moist and tasty but I cut the oil to little more than 1/2 cup, then make up the rest with unsweetened apple sauce, and because the apple sauce is sweet by itself, I cut the sugar by 1/2 as well. It still comes out very moist because of the carrots but you can enjoy it more knowing there's a lot less sugar and oil in it. And with the icing you don't miss less sugar at all. Everyone I've served it to has loved it, and mostly go for seconds. I'm only giving it 2 stars because of the heavy oil and sugar content, not taste or texture.

Karen A's Chocolate Dump Cake

Reviewed: Jan. 29, 2006
My famiy would have enjoyed this a lot more had it not been for all those chocolate chips, and I added only 1 cup, not the 2. The cake itself was very good after scraping off the choc chips. I'll make it again but without the choc chips. Great with ice-cream and whipped cream!
