About this Cook
I work in publishing, editing books. I discovered cooking in college when I had my first apartment, with loads of help from the internet.
My favorite things to cook
I love making scones, cookies, and breads, Mexican and Indian fare, dips and appetizers, and things that walk the fine line of being both healthy and something my husband will really like.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Christmas feast with my husband and family! We start planning the feast as soon as Thanksgiving is over, from appetizers to side dishes to vegetarian main dish to dessert, and the chopping and preliminary cooking starts two days before the feast itself.
My cooking triumphs
Finally reverse engineering the perfect guacamole recipe from a local restaurant -- it was the first success I ever had without working from a recipe. Also, vegetarian meatloaf -- a delicious conglomerate of several recipes found on this site.
My cooking tragedies
Trying to make Baked Alaska for my boyfriend's birthday in college...I didn't know what it meant to whip eggwhites until "stiff peaks" formed so I just stopped after my arm got tired and the entire thing was deformed and melted in the oven (lesson #2 -- don't put ice cream in the oven, even if an online recipe tells you to). The poor guy insisted on trying to make me feel better by eating it anyway, raw eggwhites and all. I found out after we got married that he wasn't just trying to make me feel better and he seriously thought it tasted fine that way.

Peach Muffins
Fabulous, light, fluffy muffins. I took the suggestions of some other reviewers and used more peaches (4 whole ones, peeled and pitted, then run through a food processor), 1/2 cup of milk, replaced 1/2 cup of the vegetable oil with applesauce, and then cut the sugar back to adjust for the fact that I'd used cinnamon applesauce. I ended up using 1 cup white sugar and 1/2 cup brown. They were done a couple minutes early too, so keep an eye/nose on them.

Ranch Dressing II
I make a healthier version with 1 cup non-fat yogurt and 2 tbs mayo, and I replace the onion powder with fresh grated onion (which prevents it from tasting yogurty). Any time I make this dressing, I end up stuffing myself with so much of it on top of raw veggies that I end up losing a pound or two from not being able to consume much else -- it's that good.

Grandmother's Buttermilk Cornbread
I used plain non-fat yogurt thinned with a little skim milk instead of buttermilk, and I cut the sugar to 1/2 cup. This was fantastic. I think I can safely call this the best cornbread I've ever had.
