About this Cook
My mom is a caterer, and i've been watching her run her business out of our home since i was ten. i've learned an awful lot from just watching her and asking questions. now, as a grown woman with a household of my own, i cook for my husband as often as i can- and i don't mean open up a boxed kit. i watch a lot of food network to learn more, and it inspires me to want to study food for real- especially japanese cooking.
My favorite things to cook
Chicken, fried rice, meatloaf, macaroni & cheese
My favorite family cooking traditions
my mother's thanksgiving dinner: turkey, gravy, cranberry sauce, sweet potato casserole (with pecans & brown sugar, NOT marshmallows!), stove top stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, asparagus w/hollandaise, my grandmother's popovers, and pumpkin pie.
My cooking triumphs
nothing gives me greater pleasure than figuring out how to create a meal (say, chili) on my own, without looking up a recipe- and getting it right! my mom's a professional, self-taught, foodie, and it makes me happy to make her proud of me. (i am my mother's daughter ^___^)
My cooking tragedies
back when i was first on my own, i hadn't done much cooking beyond running couscous under hot water and adding different things to it. i was staying with a friend while i was helping him move out of his apartment, and we were tired but hungry one night. all he had was beef, so i ran to the store and got a box of hamburger helper (we were broke.) i'd never made it before- and i didn't read the box. i forgot to drain the grease off the beef before i added everything else. it was horrible. (of course, hamburger helper is horrible anyway...)
