Well, the baking madness finally came to an end as I rushed to fill cookie orders for my small hobby farm. After the gingerbread houses and Santa only knows how many dozens of cookies, I can't believe my hand made it through the holiday season. When one is icing cookies for 20 of 24 hours… MORE

Okay so, I did another gingerbread house today. Someone from my son's school ordered one. I just couldn't say no. This is a mini gingerbread house. The four smallest bushes are made out of mini marshmallows - so that should help give you an idea of the size. And now the back... The side… MORE

I love Christmas. I love everything about it. My grandfather felt the same way when he was alive. His all time favorite (other than German Christmas Polka music) were the gingerbread houses my mom and I use to make for him every year. He died just before Christmas over ten years ago and since… MORE

The last few years I have been pretty lazy, I must admit, and always went out and bought a cake for my son's birthday. I don't know why being that I can make a decent birthday cake. Maybe because his birthday is the same week as Thanksgiving and usually the kitchen is in some sort of disarray… MORE

Okay, Ladies and Gents - You decided! The official results of the Plan My Thanksgiving polls. Thank-you to everyone who voted! It was touch and go there for some recipes. The turkey's were neck and neck for awhile, but in the end the true winner gobbled up the competition. (I can't help… MORE

It begins with a scrape and a bit of a creakFollowed by a thud and a much louder squeakThere is more of a rattle and click clack clackAll lovely sounds as I check my spice rack In anticipation the dishes excitedly gleam As the tea kettle sings in her usual screamThe forks and spoons all dance… MORE

Okay, I am doing something I have NEVER done before. Awhile ago I read about a bride that allowed complete strangers plan her wedding by giving them a vote. I liked the idea so much it seemed to make perfect sense to transfer the process over into my life. So with Thanksgiving just days away,… MORE

Okay, so the past few nights I have been on a baking rampage. I tell everyone I'm going to bed, then head up the stairs. By the time I reach the top step I have a craving for a bed time snack. (Now I'm not suppose to be snacking after 8pm according to my latest diet.) Here is how I justify… MORE

A storm rolled in yesterday and with it rolled in bad attitudes for me and my mom.  That whole attitude is a choice thing - yeah well, I'm ignoring that self-help lecture and choosing to accept that in this moment of adversity that which does not kill me merely postpones the… MORE

Every now and then I go through a stage that makes my mom shake her head with dismay. This is one of those days. In my defense, I do carry a disclaimer on my key chain that states, "There is no excuse for the way I am about to behave." I got the idea for this blog a few days ago… MORE

About Me
I never liked to cook that much until I moved away from home. Perhaps it was need that developed my interests and honed my skills. A passion for culture was introduced into my menu during my time as a Ringling Brother's circus employee. Until then I never knew how a home-cooked meal could draw people from all walks of life together. I find it fascinating that people are so connected by a mere morsel. And I live for that genuine smile I can bring to their eyes with just a touch of food on their lips.
My favorite things to cook
Being a woman, I'm a moody creature so my favorites vary. Many times I turn to those tried and true recipes like Kay's Spaghetti and Lasagna Sauce, other times I want to add a new twist to the old like lavender fig jelly. Whenever I'm in between moods I can be found in my kitchen whipping up something sweet. Try the Best Brownies recipe - you'll never eat any another brownie!
My favorite family cooking traditions
Both of my parents are excellent cooks, my dad worked in a chef's kitchen and my mom had a natural passion for cooking. My great-grandmother was from Germany and is notorious in our family for her skills. This has given me something to strive for. Autumn and Christmas bring in a load of tradition with lebkuchen, rum balls, sauerkraut, pasty recipes, and her famous potato salad.
My cooking triumphs
My mom can decorate any cookie or gingerbread house out there. She's been featured in newspapers for her designs and talents. Any time I can plug out a design as good as hers and hear it from her mouth - I'm on cloud 9. But I can admit I'm limited in that area so I go in the kitchen where she has claimed off limits for herself. Marshmallow fondants and Granny Kat's Pumpkin Roll are some of my latest personal triumphs.
My cooking tragedies
I began cooking around 9 on a regular basis and at that time, if it wasn't baking, I was guaranteed to set it on fire. My name paired with the smoke alarm was a running joke for years. Dishes like scrambled french toast that our dog even refused to eat put my cooking name in the mud. Other classic mistakes like using too small a cake pan, or soupy pies didn't help much either.
