Flourless Chocolate Cake II

Reviewed: Nov. 4, 2006
This was my first attempt at flourless chocolate cake, and I'm completely sold! I used dark chocolate chips, a little less sugar, and kahlua in place of vanilla extract. My sweetie and I had to control ourselves from eating the whole thing warm from the pan. I wish I had some vanilla ice cream for the top, but it's still great. It did fall apart though, despite precautions... ;-( It's great for those of us who like our chocolate unadulterated by most anything. I'm going to try other flourless recipes too, but this one is an easy keeper. UPDATE: Baking in a springform pan makes removal much easier!

Mahogany Devil's Food Cake

Reviewed: Nov. 3, 2006
This cake was nice and moist, but was bland; it didn't have nearly enough chocolate to make it appropriately sinful. It wasn't fabulous enough to make me want to try again with modifications. Oh well...

Sour Cream Chocolate Frosting

Reviewed: Nov. 2, 2006
Nice creamy, chocolatey frosting. I used milk chocolate chips and only a cup of powdered sugar, and frosted a devil's food cake. I think I'll use dark chocolate next time for more flavor.

Extra Gingery Bread

Reviewed: Oct. 26, 2006
Dark, rich and fabulous! The bits of candied ginger are wonderful flavor bursts. I might use even more next time. The only change I made, by necessity, was to use orange juice instead of apple. Served with a cream cheese frosting dotted with more candied ginger. I'll be making this again frequently, especially as holidays approach.

Fabulously Sweet Pear Cake

Reviewed: Oct. 18, 2006
A decent cake, but not long on flavor. I can't taste any pear in it. I checked the cake at 55 minutes and it probably could have used five minutes less. It smelled ever so wonderful while baking, but not worth the time overall.

Easiest Mushroom Sauce

Reviewed: Oct. 8, 2006
Very easy and good. I used sliced white onion instead of green, and chicken broth instead of beef, based on what I had last minute. It went very well with baked chicken and pasta. Thank you for a good simple recipe.

Baba Ghanoush

Reviewed: Sep. 19, 2006
Yum! I followed the recipe exactly; the only thing I'd change is to add more garlic. I served it with tomatoes and grilled garlic chicken in pita.

Basic Cream Cheese Frosting

Reviewed: Sep. 19, 2006
Very yummy, basic frosting. I used half the sugar called for, and coconut rum in place of vanilla. I spread it on carrot cake and it was perfect.

Pat's Award Winning Carrot Cake

Reviewed: Sep. 19, 2006
This carrot cake is FABULOUS! Wonderfully moist and flavorful, with a beautiful rich orange color. It disappeared in no time. The only change I made was to cook and puree carrots, instead of buying jarred baby food. This is the first carrot cake I ever made, and it will become a standard in my repertoire.

Classic Peanut Butter Cookies

Reviewed: Sep. 4, 2006
Hardly peanutty in flavor at all, and too dry for my taste, even though I only baked them for 8 minutes. Disappointing...

Lime Garlic Chicken

Reviewed: Jul. 9, 2006
Delicious, both tangy and smooth, just as promised. I only used 1/4 cup of butter, and that was plenty. Very quick and easy and good, I'll keep this one in mind.

Buttermilk Dressing

Reviewed: May 31, 2006
I was looking for a way to use up leftover buttermilk and found this. This dressing is a great starting point, but I found it bland on its own. With a little freshly ground pepper and the juice of a lemon, it pepped up nicely and was great on potato salad.

German Chocolate Cake III

Reviewed: May 10, 2006
Delicious! I used six semisweet chocolate squares. Nice, moist and light. I made it for a birthday celebration and it disappeared in no time. I made it one night and served it the next; the frosting mellowed well, and was a big spoonful of creamy goodness. Thanks for a great recipe!

Lemon Square Bars

Reviewed: May 4, 2006
I found these much too sweet. I followed the recipe exactly, and the lemon melted into the shortbread, which made a nice lemon cake but not what I was hoping for. I'm not sure what happened. In any case, others loved it. I probably will look elsewhere for lemon bars next time, though.

Quinoa Tabbouleh

Reviewed: Mar. 29, 2006
So delicious and simple! I used cilantro in place of parsley, and chopped the carrots instead of grating them, but otherwise followed the recipe exactly. This will become a new regular on my menu! This is my first experience with quinoa, and I'm looking forward to finding new ways to use it.

Chicken Curry I

Reviewed: Feb. 25, 2006
This was my first attempt at curry, and I found it delicious! I used skinless, boneless chicken breasts, tomato sauce instead of paste, but otherwise followed the recipe exactly. Next time I'll throw some cauliflower in to simmer with the chicken. Yummy with a dollop of plain yogurt on the side!

Field Grade Spaghetti Sauce

Reviewed: Feb. 11, 2006
I skipped the onion soup mix, and used a bottle of premade spaghetti sauce. It smelled heavenly while simmering, and the cinnamon added a unique sweetness that was excellent.

Chocolate Bundt Cake

Reviewed: Jan. 4, 2006
Nice and moist, but not nearly chocolatey enough, even though I added chocolate chips to the batter. My family liked it, though; maybe just more cocoa powder next time.

A-Number-1 Banana Cake

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2005
Great flavor, and very easy to put together. I baked it in a bundt pan, and unfortunately didn't leave it in the oven long enough, so I ended up with a pudding center, so to speak. But the parts that got done were great. I'll definitely try it again, in the suggested pans next time.
