About this Cook
I am an old-fashioned cook and I love comfort food, especially southern food. I am of Hungarian-Romanian blood and thus love the cooking that comes from these areas.I own several hundered cookboods and love to read them like novels. I plan my weekly menus and so our meals are varied. I love reading and manage to read several books a week as I am a fast reader. I love sharing my cooking with friends and neighbors. Cooking is a joy and I love using new fun recipes for special occasions. I am known as one to go to for recipes. I am a senior, age 66 but mentally feel 26 and still feel young at heart. I enjoy the great outdoors and my husband and I love to go on long rides (more than a hundered miles) exploring out state, discovering little out of the way places to eat. There are many good Mom and Pop restaurants out there so we rarely eat at a chain type. We will drive miles to buy meat, Amish goods and other special things once we have found a treasure trove somewhere. It's fun!
My favorite things to cook
I love comfort food like southern style cooking but also like my childhood eating style which was Hungarian and Romanian. Cabbage rolls, Hungarian Goulash, Chicken Paprikash, Palaschinta (crepes) filled with savory or sweet fillings like cheese. I like Pot roast, Pork roast, chicken and dumplings, pies and cakes from scratch. Vegies cooked in classic ways. I am not fond of the trend of barely cooked vegetables although I like sauteed green beans in the Chinese style. Creamed Hungarian spinach is a favorite.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Growing up with an Hungarian mother and a Romanian father who could not speak to each other in thier own languages but spoke in German, I was exposed to the cusienes of thier upbringing. Watching my mother make strudel the real way, stretching the dough paper thin is a happy memory for me. Unfortunately I did not learn how to make it that way myself, something I regret. My mother as a young woman newly arrived in the USA found work in a Jewish household as a nanny and thus learned some delicious Jewish cooking like kugel.
My cooking triumphs
One of my best recieved cooking efforts is an Italian Ham and Cheese pie which is a great appetizer made in a springform pan and of course, those Hungarian meals that most people don't get to experience. Desserts are trifles, (so easy) pies and cakes.
My cooking tragedies
I've had my share although I tend to block them from memory. If I try a new recipe and it turns out badly then I know I won't make it again. My husband is a willing taster and lets me know if it's good to go.
