Yesterday was a wake-up call for me. At 48, I am "on the cusp of several serious desieses." This according to Dr. M.  Sigh... Well, I shouldn't be surprised. Acually, I'm not. I have felt it for a long time now. I have to turn my health around now or it will be "too… MORE

I am a teacher. I love being a teacher. But when the winter storm watches are posted, I am right their with my children...glued to the TV...longing for a snow day! I know that my lesson plans will have to be re-worked. My students will be restless tomorrow. My driveway will demand… MORE

Like all of you I have watched in rapt horror the hearbreak of the Haitian people. How trivial my problems seem when viewed through the lense of unspeakable tragedy. I cannot imagine how they must feel. All I know is I am so thankful that my family is safely within the walls of my home and… MORE

Some days, I wonder if the purpose of my life is to serve as a warning for others!lol. Not really, my life is pretty terrific. But my black lab, Shadow, had a pretty frustrating day. I am in search of budget recipes that the Hubs and kids will eat. Not an easy quest! Tonight I made chili noodle… MORE

It's true. Something in my house is more bloated than I am. the amount of money spent on feeding my hoarde of teenage boys is astounding -- and growing exponentially. The Hubs and I had "the talk." You know, the one about how we're spending too much money and we have to cut back. Well,… MORE

Today I violated a fundamental law of the smart plan B cook: NEVER GO TO THE SUPER-MEGA-MART ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON. I know, I know...what was I thinking? Upon entering, I was overwhelmed by the hordes of harried shoppers, many wrangling wailing children, navigating the choked ailes. I… MORE

One of the items on my list of resolutions this year was to learn to make braciola (pronounced brazhole - I think). Today, I thought I would kick off my shoes and jump right in while I had my nerve and give it a try. If you're like me, you had never heard of this rustic Italian supper dish… MORE

As I was fighting with my new flat iron this morning getting ready for church, a subtle, yet delightful aroma wound its way up the stairs, down the hall, around the corner and into my bathroom. I didn't notice it at first, but I slowly relaxed and stopped fretting about the very real… MORE

My thirteen-year-old is something of a dreamer. He dreams of many things, and being a thirteen-year-old boy, I probably don't want to know about some of them. But, I hope I always have time to listen to his rambling and lofty ideas. Some of his dreams are really big. He wants to be a famous… MORE

If you saw me in all my size 16 glory, you might assume that my new year's resolutions would involve walking during lunch or following the latest bread-banning, point-counting, good-fat, bad-fruit, on-the-beach diet. Nope. Not me. Most of my resolutions involve food in some way… MORE

About Me
I am the lucky wife of a wonderful man, the mother of four incredible boys. After several years of classroom teaching, I am now an administrator for a large Head Start program. I am also a semi-professional photographer. We live in fly-over country with our black lab, Shadow.
My favorite things to cook
I am looking for new favorites, because I am trying to adopt new, healthier eating habits. Hoping to find recipes that are big on flavor and nutrition while also quick and easy.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My children and I bake many, many cookies at Christmas, and they always do make-your-own-pizzas on Christmas Eve. Christmas is always ham, and my boys can request anything they want for dinner on their birthdays, which usually means pizza or wings.
My cooking triumphs
I learned to make chicken parmegiana, my husband's favorite dish, ALMOST as well as his mother!
My cooking tragedies
Any attempt at baking yeast bread has met with disaster. Those little yeast spores just don't like me.
