The adventures of learning to cook from scratch

My new life

I am just out of active military service, and I am attempting to settle in Rhode Island with my boyfriend.  I say attempting because we are buying a home together and well our closing has been continously bumped due to this issue or that, in fact we have been waiting to close for 3 months, all while living in my boyfriend's brother's house (7 people, one bathroom, small kitchen), well you get the idea, the situation is not exactly ideal.

While I was still in the US Army, I started thinking a lot about the meals I would cook and about how I enjoy cooking.  I want to start out new here and I also have a strong desire to learn to cook everything from scratch.  So I have been researching how to articles and videos on everything from baking my own bread to caning and preserving my very own garden vegetables.

I have decided to start a blog in order to talk about my adventures in learning how to cook every meal from scratch.  I figure this will be an adventure because I never learned how to cook anything other than prepackaged foods from my mother.  When I was growing up I always thought that all cake mix came from a box.

I do not know when my adventure will begin as I currently do not have a kitchen, but I will continue to research techniques and recipes of made from scratch meals, and eventually when I do find myself in a kitchen, I will share my successes and failures with anyone who happens upon my blog.

Happy Holidays and I will hopefully be cooking soon.

I felt a teeny pang when you sppoke of the prepackaged foods growing up. I was always a working mother and used a lot of those myself to get a quick dinner on the table after work/school, before Little League, swim lessons, Girl Scouts, etc... But its never too late and I'm having fun experimenting with new things and foods and taking my time! Good Luck! p.s. my daughter is a fabulous cook, you can be one too!

Welcome home - so glad you are safe! And thank you for your service to our country! I'm sure you will do really well with your "schooling" here - there are a TON of videos showing how to do even the simplest things, so no mysteries to trip you up. I'm curious as to what you will make for your first meal in your new home? HaPpY Holidays to you & yours.

We are still waiting to close ... I am not exactly sure what are the issues that have kept us in my boyfriends brother's house .... However, I already know what I am going to start out with, chicken stock! I plan on making about 6 quarts of chicken stock and from that making chicken soup, condensed cream of chicken soup and cream of mushroom. I am thinking this will give me not only the chance to practice canning, but give me the foundation to many of my "made from scratch" meals. :)

Love your story. And welcome to AllRecipes. Have a look at "the buzz." It's fun to see what others are cooking today, and it's a great place to ask questions. My nephew is in the army. Thank you for your service to our country.
