I made this recipe almost exactly as written (I didn't have sherry vinegar, so I just added half the measure of red wine). It had a VERY subtle flavor, almost weak. Not enough flavor to carry the soup on its own, but enough to not be bland.
Most of the high reviewers added several pungent spices to the dish that would seriously alter the flavor chemistry. Having made the original, I am in agreement with doctoring the spices a bit. The recipe makes for a great base, but needs to be flavored according to your tastes.
My husband ate all of the leftovers, but I think it was more because he had missed lunch than because he really liked it.
