Wiener Schnitzel

Reviewed: Nov. 8, 2004
This recipe has been in our family for decades and I too found it messy to prepare but worth the trouble and make it regularly with both veal and chicken. Recently, I have started clarifying butter (up to 8 blocks at a time), storing in tupperware boxes in fridge and using it for frying with the addition of a little olive oil . It remains clear and unburnt till the end of frying not matter how big the quantity is. Frying time is no longer as dreaded and no clean up of black crusty bits in between batches.

Banana Banana Bread

Reviewed: Sep. 25, 2004
An awesome banana bread. Having sworn off banana bread recipes as the family got really tired of them, I was tempted to try this one because it took care of all my over-ripened bananas in one go (6-7 bananas). Well, my husband and kids can't get enough of it. I've made it several times since - always successful (except for the one time I got distracted and used baking powder instead of baking soda; the result was a compacted cooked goop). Thanks, Shelley, for sharing a wonderful recipe.

Easy Peach Cobbler

Reviewed: Aug. 30, 2004
Memo to self: do not read reviews before trying for the first time. Reason: I mixed the advice of 2 reviewers. First, I tripled the recipe (well I had a huge can of peaches from Costco). Second, I melted the butter in the oven, added the peaches and then poured the rest of the ingredients (which were mixed together) on top. Baked all in a 10x14" Pyrex dish. The butter bubbled vigourously from under the top mixture, spilled over and started burning after a while. The kitchen was quickly filled with smoke and burning smell. Managed to save cobbler and it tasted great. Sons loved it with ice cream and peach sauce. Will definitely try again but will stick with the original recipe. Gotta go! I have an oven to clean.

Mrs. Fields Cookie Recipe I

Reviewed: Aug. 29, 2004
The complaint was that they were too mealy although I pulverised the oatmeal thoroughly. One of my sons called it an interestingly strange cookie. They stayed high though but had to throw out what was not eaten the first two days as they went stale. In comparison, Ashley's chocolate chip cookies which I baked a week later were a tremendous success and were consumed to the last crumb.

Ashley's Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: Aug. 23, 2004
Congratulations, Ashley! You've just passed our resident gourment taste tester. My 24 year old son gave you a 9 1/2 out of ten the first day these were baked and said the remaining 1/2 will be granted when they pass the freshness test in a couple of days. Well, they did. The dough is excellent to work with. I like a dough that I can roll into balls without messy hands. They stayed high after cooling, were chewy and chokeful of chocolate chips. I think the problem some had with inconsistency is because the dry ingredients have to be added in gradually as per instructions so that the baking powder will be well-distributed throughout the dough. After trying tens of recipes this is the one I'll keep. Thanks, Ashley.

Amazing Banana Sorbet

Reviewed: Aug. 4, 2004
Being tired of banana breads, cookies and muffins I decided to try this recipe. I used 3/4 cup of leftover heavy sugar syrup to which lemon juice had been added during cooking (2cups sugar, 1 cup water & 1/4 cup lemon juice). I then processed the bananas and the syrup briefly in food processor until smooth, poured into a tupperware container, froze for a few hours, mashed with a fork and froze again. Hubby, who's not too fond of banana concoctions, asked for second and third helpings. DELICIOUS.
