I have always remembered life events based on what I wore or what I ate, whether it was Pizza Hut or lunch at Chez Panisse. I strive to make the most of each day.
My favorite things to cook
Grilled fish, chili, beef burgundy, Japanese-style curry rice, slow-cooker pork, summer salads, cakes, anything in my cast-iron skillet.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mom always made katsudon for my birthday and it remains one of my favorite meals. She mastered many homestyle Japanese favorites as well as my dad's favorites from his New England upbringing. I still recall her shake-shake-shaking fresh, hot doughnuts in a sugar-filled paper bag. Those were amazing.
My cooking triumphs
A two-layer, jam-filled birthday cake from scratch for my husband. Man, was that good! I love to entertain and cook favorite foods for my friends and family. I was so delighted that I managed to cook a gluten-free and vegan dinner for one of my favorite people that everyone else also enjoyed. That took a lot of planning! But it was worth it to see her smile. These days, I feel triumphant anytime my young son enjoys my cooking :)
My cooking tragedies
I am very challenged by eggs. Meringue eludes me; I once had to bring a veggie tray to a party in place of the pie I planned to bake due to collapsed meringue. I continue to seek a foolproof method for hard-boiled eggs.

Aunt Norma's Rhubarb Muffins
Baked this recipe as written and was rewarded with my favorite homemade muffins to date! Moist, fluffy, perfect balance of sweet and tart with that cinnamon kick. As the recipe implores, be sure not to overmix your batter to ensure this outcome. The neighbors were delighted, as were my rhubarb-doubtful husband and son. Now, to bake more deliciousness with the leftover buttermilk!

Kentucky Butter Cake
This cake somehow manages to be rich and mild at the same time. It's delightful on its own, but also would be mighty tasty with some sliced strawberries or perhaps some blueberry syrup drizzled on top.

Paleo Cauliflower Rice
Served beneath salsa chicken. The simple flavor was a nice counterpart to the chicken's spice.
