Gail, w a wonderful dh for 10 years, a mother of 3 boys (96, 98, 00) the youngest has learning differences, a home business www.treasuredkeepsakesbygail.com, academics sports advisor for Cub Scouts work with the Missionaries from my church weekly. I use my crock pot nearly weekly. My parents divorced in 1980 (I was 10 quick someone do the math, how old am I UGH) so I did lots of cooking, my mom did the best as she could, she often worked 2 jobs which means I learned to cook complete meals by the time I was 12, often having dinner ready so mom could eat between jobs. I have always loved to cook. Just about anything I actually love the more complex recipes that take time, I love the pride I get from a job well done. In addition to cooking my other hobbies include scrapbooking, bird watching, scrapbooking, reading, scrapbooking, playing with my boys from board games, to walks, computer games, going to the park etc, oh did I mention I love scrapbooking?
My favorite things to cook
Millionaires short bread, it takes work and time but well worth it! I love everything from the very complex to the super easy and fast.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Home made chocolates and candies at Christmas time. The whole family would get together just before Thanksgiving, usually the weekend before. My mom, her parents and brothers with their wives and their children. We would work all day on chocolate covered cherries, peanut butter patties, peppermint patties (actually just about any flavor of patties like York but other flavors cherry, cinnamon, vanilla etc) chocolate covered pretzels, fudge, cookies and usually would add in a few new ones occasionally, like chex mix, peanut butter fudge, and candy brittle. I love going to my mom's early to help with Christmas dinner. I get great satisfaction from making a big meal.
My cooking triumphs
Millionaires shortbread! I made it the frist time and it was great. Also I just love it when I make something and the whole family likes it, my youngest is very picky and now my oldest is starting to get picky a bit and my dh is also picky. As luck would have it they all do not like different things! I also love it when I bring something to pot luck dinners and it is all gone! and when others ask for the recipe, I have started making recipe cards and take them with me to the dinners to share. Just had family reunion and one asked for the recipe for my cornbread, yummy! I add in honey.
My cooking tragedies
I had company over (the sister missionaries from my church) and they do not know how to cook very many things so I have started to teach them each month we get together twice a month and cook and eat together. We just moved to our first home with an electric stove(lived in a trailer for 9 years and had a gas stove. Anyway there was a bit of grease on the burner from when dh cooked hamburgers on the stove the night before. Well it started a little fire and it took me a second to think what to do, I took the pan off the stove and stood there and then one of the sisters said do you have baking soda? As she was saying that I put the lid from another pan over the burner and put out the fire. It was very embarrassing because they were here for me to help them to learn to cook and here I was starting a FIRE! AND I stood there and did not move just looking at the fire for a bit, now do not get too worried it was not more than a minute I am sure but seemed like 10 minutes.
