Chocolate Chip Pie I

Reviewed: Jul. 11, 2009
Sorry, but we did not enjoy this. Just can't put my finger on what was wrong, but it didn't seem like a good combination of ingredients. I really wanted to like it!

Butter Flaky Pie Crust

Reviewed: Jul. 11, 2009
Okay, I'm giving this recipe the benefit of the doubt because all of the great ratings -- so 3 stars for it. However, if I was going only on my experience with it (maybe I did something wrong?), I'd give one. Blah and chewy...not worth the time put into it! Sorry!

Hot German Potato Salad III

Reviewed: Jul. 11, 2009
My husband gives it 6 stars! Used 5-6 good sized red potatoes (skins on) - easier and gives it a nice, rustic look. Absolutely delicious!

Indoor S'mores

Reviewed: Jun. 21, 2009
I've been making a close variation of this recipe for a few years -- I can barley control myself when they're around! The key difference is the marshmallows...I add fewer, but add them just after the melted chocolate is mixed into the cereal. That way the marshmallows stay mostly in tact, yet melt slightly against the hot chocolate. The result is hitting additive little pockets of marshmallow when biting into the squares! Love them! Kids adore them too..."kids" of all ages! I've never tried making them without the corn syrup, but after reading one of the reviews here, I might try it -- to help curb my guilt a bit! I also add a bit of vanilla to the chocolate/syrup/butter mix after it's heated. Oh, after a day or so, they lose a little of their crisp freshness.

Actually Delicious Turkey Burgers

Reviewed: Jun. 20, 2009
These were really great, and surprisingly super moist! When I cut into one to check for pink, juice poured out. I basically followed the recipe, except that I used the whole egg, and I added a good amount of feta cheese. Delicious!

Oatmeal and Applesauce Pancakes

Reviewed: Jun. 20, 2009
Sorry, but these did NOT go over well at our house! I made them exactly as stated. Besides the slight gumminess, they were just SO bland. I guess this is supposed to be a "healthy" pancake, but you can have a tasty, healthy pancake! We love the Nut and Grain Pancake recipe from this site. I hate to give negative reviews, but this one just won't be made again here!

Peanut Butter Vegetable Chicken Soup

Reviewed: Apr. 14, 2009
I was surprised at how much we enjoyed this! My husband generally does not like peanut butter, but he had two huge bowls of this yummy soup. Even after I told him the "secret ingredient", he got another. Quick, easy, healthy - will definitely go into the rotation. *I added some fresh mushrooms, and used a can of diced tomatoes instead of chopping the can of whole tomatoes.

Crispy and Creamy Doughnuts

Reviewed: Jan. 28, 2009
While these were pretty good, I just didn't think that the taste was worth the time investment! Maybe I was hoping for too much. I tried to not hold it against the recipe, and still gave 4 stars. If you're really trying to compare them to Krispie Kremes, the donuts themselves are too dense, but the glaze is spot on (as long as you make it thin enough...I added a bit more water.) My main complaint was that I made a half batch of donuts and a full batch of glaze, and STILL ran out of glaze! I did dip both sides of the donuts in the glaze, but I don't think they were that great without it, so I'd definitely double dip again! If you'd like to add sprinkles, do so quickly after glazing or you'll miss your window of opportunity. Lastly, I found that the best donuts were the ones that were the least cooked -- almost just a pale tan color.

Hasty Chocolate Pudding

Reviewed: Dec. 14, 2008
Four stars for finding another easy and great-tasting recipe that can replace the store-bought alternative! After reading the reviews, it seemed best to add a pinch of salt to the dry ingredients, and also to add a bit of butter (I used 1 Tbsp.) with the vanilla. I used another reviewer's suggestion to sit the bowl in cold water for a while after cooking (while stirring the whole time) to cool it down a little more quickly before refrigerating. The taste is excellent, but I don't particularly care for the super thick consistency of it. I wasn't expecting instant pudding consistency or anything, but this is THICK! Next time I might cut down the cornstarch just a bit.

Cocktail Meatballs I

Reviewed: Dec. 14, 2008
We thought these were pretty good, but I was hoping for more after going to the trouble of making them. I hate to admit it, but I've found store-bought meatballs that I love - I think I'll stick with them (in the classic chili sauce/cranberry sauce combo)! Thanks for a tasty alternative, though.

Southwestern Egg Rolls

Reviewed: Dec. 14, 2008
These were great - I think my husband may love me a little bit more each time I make this recipe :) I love the fact that it's actually fairly healthy, and can be used as a main dish - not just an appetizer. I followed the recipe exactly, I simply chose to bake them at 400 for about 15 minutes instead of frying. This actually makes the recipe much more quick and easy too - after filling, simply spray with olive oil spray and bake until crispy (no need to freeze!) I was able to put these together in the morning, refrigerate until our party, then bake at the last minute - which is SO handy. Since we liked these as is, I probably won't try the egg roll wrappers, as others have suggested. I am going to try making the filling, and freezing it in batches for quick preparation in the future!

Stuffed Mushrooms with Spinach

Reviewed: Dec. 6, 2008
Although I plan to alter the ingredient amounts a little the next time I make these, I still had to give it 5 stars for being so tasty! For my taste, next time I'm going to add a bit more bacon and either more parmesan or a little mozzarella. I rubbed the dish with a little butter and sauteed the onions/garlic in a bit of butter, but didn't see the need in adding even more butter at the end. Really a great recipe, I just want to make sure that the tastes of the parmesan and bacon are able to hold up against all of the spinach! OH - like others have mentioned, for some reason these seem to take longer than expected. It's not as simple as mixing the filling and stuffing the mushrooms, so plan ahead!

Lemon-Raspberry Muffins

Reviewed: Dec. 5, 2008
Okay, I'm giving these 3 stars due to the fact that they are super-easy to prepare, and the taste of the muffin part is good. But, I have a few complaints too - mainly with the appearance. The muffins were very flat -- instead of puffing up, they just sort of stayed flat and started running over the edges. This caused not only flat muffins, but muffins with dark brown, crunchy edges! Also, my fresh raspberries seemed to clump together when baking. I folded them in evenly and made sure to get some in each muffin. But, when you cut the muffins open, most look the same - most of the muffin is without raspberries, then another part is a big blob of mushy baked raspberries all together! Perhaps if the raspberries were coated with a little flour before adding them they would stay in place better? Overall, these were very easy, but I probably wouldn't ever make these for guests. I might try with blueberries sometime!

Pumpkin Fluff Dip

Reviewed: Nov. 29, 2008
First of all, unless you're making enough for a marching band, I can't imagine why you'd ever want to make the full recipe! Like others have noted, make sure to notice that the sizes of the Cool Whip and pudding...both call for the large size (but the smaller can of pumpkin). I made this just before the party - I didn't think it would stay fluffy after it sat. Actually, it has now been in the refrigerator for about three days, and it's still good! As far as taste, I thought it was good, but maybe a little bland - just didn't taste like much. Some really liked it, some just thought it was okay. I served it with both cinnamon-sugar graham sticks and apple slices. My husband and I both agreed it was much better with the apples! I might make this again for a fall party. Great for kids!

Basic Vegetable Stock

Reviewed: Nov. 26, 2008
This saved the day when I was preparing the brine for our Thanksgiving turkey this year! I needed a gallon of vegetable broth -- who wants to buy that?! Plus, I'm sure the taste of this will far exceed the canned variety. I didn't actually try the broth by itself, but I'm giving it four stars for being just what I needed, straight-forward, and and saving us money. My husband was there when I strained it, and jumped out of his chair when I went to throw out the vegetables. He liked them so much he nearly made himself sick trying to eat them all!

Mom's Turkey Sausage Patties

Reviewed: Nov. 26, 2008
We thought that these were excellent - tasted just like eating regular sausage! My toddler loved them, and I'm thrilled to have another healthy option that she enjoys. I made them just as directed, adding only a touch of canola oil to the pan to fry them. My *only* complaint was that I didn't care for them as much leftover - they got pretty dry. Unless you have a big family (or don't use the whole package of turkey), you'll end up with lots of sausage! I'll definitely be making these again and again, but plan to try freezing them before cooking so that we can have freshly cooked patties anytime. Thanks SO much for this recipe! **Updated: I now shape my raw sausage patties, layer in a freezer container with waxed paper, and freeze until needed. I've thawed them before cooking, or even just fried them from frozen patties. The touch of canola oil in the pan really makes the difference in a great-tasting patty! Now that I can easily have freshly cooked sausage anytime, I love the recipe even more!

Turned out well, easy to handle, a good basic pumpkin roll! I found that I needed to add more confectioners sugar to the filling to suit my taste. Thanks.
