About this Cook
I was born and raised in Singapore but have since settled down in Southern California. I'm self-employed and work from home which allows the flexibility to have a nice home cooked lunch almost everyday.
My favorite things to cook
I love all cuisines but when it comes to cooking, I find myself going back to my "food roots" which is simple Chinese home cooking. That translates to lots of simple stir fried meats with vegetables, tofu, clear Chinese soups, congee ("jook"), fried rice and noodles. For variety, I also often cook American classics like spaghetti with meat sauce, meatloaf, oven baked chicken and casseroles.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My parents both worked when I was growing up so my grandmother (who lived with us) used to do the majority of the cooking. Most of our dinners comprised of a clear Chinese soup, and two other dishes. We ate very little meat and lots of vegetables. She used to make a favorite dish of mine that had matchstick cut yam sauteed with vegetables and some pork. Unfortunately she passed away before I was able to get the recipe from her but I've been trying to perfect my own version ever since.
My cooking tragedies
I've got a lot of cooking failures under my belt but my most recent one was when I was craving some cake and too lazy to leave the house so I threw together some ingredients that I had in the pantry, boldly substituting things I did not have with things...that probably should not be in cake. Long story short, wasn't the best cake I ever had. :/

Garlic Chicken Fragrant Rice On a Budget
This was an amazing dish for the amount of effort you put into it. It tastes just like Hainanese chicken rice (express style). The house smelled so good while it was cooking because all the ingredients were steaming together. I made the recipe without changes but will probably marinate the chicken in some oyster sauce next time for extra flavor. The rice was awesome as is. Definitely a keeper for a quick dinner option.

Yellow Cake
This is an easy recipe for bake-from-scratch cake. The flavor was good and it was moist. I thought it called for too much sugar though so I cut it down by 1/4 cup and it still tasted pretty sweet. Will try it with just 1-1/2 cups next time. Overall it's a good and simple recipe.

Annie's Fruit Salsa and Cinnamon Chips
Wow, this is a great recipe! It's very simple to prepare though a little time consuming but definitely worth making again and again esp. for parties or for hot summer days. Thanks for a great recipe.
