I was born and raised in Singapore but have since settled down in Southern California. I'm self-employed and work from home which allows the flexibility to have a nice home cooked lunch almost everyday.
I'm a single mom with an 8-yr old and a 10-yr old. I've been very lucky with my kids because they are adventurous when it comes to food and love everything I make, be it Asian, American, Thai or Mexican.
My favorite things to cook
I love all cuisines but when it comes to cooking, I find myself going back to my "food roots" which is simple Chinese home cooking. That translates to lots of simple stir fried meats with vegetables, tofu, clear Chinese soups, congee ("jook"), fried rice and noodles. For variety, I also often cook American classics like spaghetti with meat sauce, meatloaf, oven baked chicken and casseroles.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My parents both worked when I was growing up so my grandmother (who lived with us) used to do the majority of the cooking. Most of our dinners comprised of a clear Chinese soup, and two other dishes. We ate very little meat and lots of vegetables. She used to make a favorite dish of mine that had matchstick cut yam sauteed with vegetables and some pork. Unfortunately she passed away before I was able to get the recipe from her but I've been trying to perfect my own version ever since.
My cooking triumphs
I would say that anytime I make a new dish which my kids enjoy, I'd count that as a triumph. They are my biggest fans when it comes to cooking and are always willing to try whatever I make.
My cooking tragedies
I've got a lot of cooking failures under my belt but my most recent one was when I was craving some cake and too lazy to leave the house so I threw together some ingredients that I had in the pantry, boldly substituting things I did not have with things...that probably should not be in cake. Long story short, wasn't the best cake I ever had. :/
