About this Cook
A brand new mother to a beautiful daughter, I live with my husband of 7 years in a house that we built ourselves from the bottom up (no builders, no contractors). Compared to building one’s own house, cooking’s a snap!
My favorite things to cook
I love making/serving sweet things. Ironically, my husband doesn't really enjoy sweet things so I bake for everyone else instead. Desserts aside, I absolutely adore summer foods: BBQ ribs, fresh sweet corn from the garden, a kickbutt pasta salad and (my personal fave) fried green tomatoes - -that would be a meal made in heaven.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Strange that a girl who was born, raised and currently lives in Northern Michigan would have such a desire for southern cooking, but my mum is a southern to her core, so I grew up with such things as sweet tea (always a pitcher in the fridge), boiled peanuts, shrimp gumbo, fried okra/green tomatoes as staples. I'm probably the only woman my age within a 300 mile radius who knows the smell of a roux cooking. My dad, meanwhile is brazilian, and mum has also mastered the art of south american cooking. What a great heritage for a cook!
My cooking triumphs
Mastering a genre that my mum hasn't really ever focused on: gourmet desserts. Tiramisu, flan, creme brulee, it's MY bag.
My cooking tragedies
I have never been able to master this recipe that I have for coconut chocolate chip meringue cookies. I've tried again and again, and I can never make the meringue RISE to the occasion.

Blue Cheese Crusted Filet Mignon with Port Wine Sauce
I made this recipe for a “stay-in” Valentine’s Day dinner, and it was so fantastic that we were both convinced that it was better (and cheaper!) than any meal we could bought if we’d gone out to eat. Since my husband and I like our meat at the rare end of medium rare, I only cooked the steaks for 14 minutes, and broiled them for 2. They were absolutely perfect – almost but just above bloody. Since the rest of the meal was done (and the baby’s patience was wearing thin) we only let them sit for about 5 minutes, but they were still great.

Cedarwood
This is absolutely wonderful! I made it for an afternoon bridal shower/bacholerette party, as a departure from the traditional "punch" beverage. I was at first concerned about the peculiar mixture of tastes, but all for nothing, as it ended up being delicious. Would definitely make again (and again).

Cola Beans
These were okay. I think giving them a 5 star rating is way overboard, as they really were nothing special. In my opinion, they taste just like some of the pricer baked beans out of the can. For the prepwork that I put into them, I would rather have just bought a few of those canned beans, heated them up and served them.
