Baked Pork Chops I

Reviewed: Sep. 17, 2013
Bland comfort food. My husband and son quite liked it, I thought it was just OK, and too much work (and mess) to make considering the results. I reduced the cooking time by 30 minutes but the pork chops were still overdone. I probably won't make this again but if I did I'd put more into the sauce, onions and mushrooms at least, and cut the cooking time down to 25 minutes without the sauce and 10 minutes with, or heat the sauce separately and pour it over the chops to keep the breading from becoming soggy.

Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies I

Reviewed: Jan. 11, 2013
These were very tasty, however they are more chocolate chip cookies with some oats thrown in than oatmeal cookies. I made them as written, just slightly less shortening (which was good because even with a little less they were quite oily), and slightly fewer chocolate chips (again good because even with the amount I added, about one and a quarter cups, the chocolate completely overwhelmed the oatmeal). I did add some vanilla. Although I prefer the taste of butter, in this recipe using shortening didn't diminish the flavor. I baked on parchment paper which prevented the cookies from becoming as flat as some reviewers have complained of. While these were not the oatmeal cookies I'd been hoping for, they were delicious cookies nonetheless.

Easy Beef Stroganoff

Reviewed: Oct. 16, 2012
This was really bland as written. I had to add two extra beef bouillon cubes, some garlic powder, paprika, a couple teaspoons of wine vinegar (didn't have any wine on hand) and plenty of salt and pepper just to make it palatable. Also I didn't care for the texture of ground beef in this recipe. I will look for a tastier beef stroganoff recipe.

Pineapple Banana Bread

Reviewed: Aug. 30, 2011
Good but too sweet. I already reduced the sugar to 1.5 cups, but next time I'll try one cup.

The Best Lemon Bars

Reviewed: Feb. 19, 2011
These didn't turn out for me. The base was too buttery and crumbly. The lemon topping sunk into the base. Actually it sunk right through, so the top was more crusty and the bottom was pasty. The taste was OK but too buttery. Was planning to bring these to a potluck today but will be leaving them at home.

Maria's Pepper Steak

Reviewed: Jan. 24, 2011
As written the recipe gets three stars. To improve it the tweaks many other reviewers noted are necessary. If you cook the meat in sauce you are boiling it, and it becomes tough. Better to brown the meat, then add the sauce with the vegetables until heated through (I think 8 minutes is too long). Also the sauce was watery; next time I'd either reduce it by cooking the sauce alone on high for few minutes, or add a bit of corn starch. All that said, the combination of flavors was good.

The Best Rolled Sugar Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 23, 2010
I followed the recipe exactly, refrigerated overnight and until the next afternoon, and the dough was a sticky, unworkable mess. I had to give up on rolling them and making cut outs. I just formed the dough into balls and baked. The cookies spread a lot and came out soft, cakey and bland. I guess my kids will still enjoy decorating and eating them, but they're not fit to give as gifts. Disappointing.

Butterscotch Oatmeal

Reviewed: Nov. 30, 2010
I don't usually care for the texture of oatmeal, but this I liked. A little too sweet for a regular breakfast; next time I'll try cutting the sugar in half, and maybe add a pinch of salt.

Grandma's Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

Reviewed: Nov. 18, 2010
The good: Unlike a lot of oatmeal raisin cookies I've tried on this site, these ones don't spread, or crumple when you try to take them off the sheet. The bad: The texture is gummy and doughy, and the flavor is weak. I've never used a cookie recipe that called for milk, maybe that was the problem here.

Ooey-Gooey Cinnamon Buns

Reviewed: Nov. 2, 2010
This was my first time baking with yeast. It took ages, but these turned out great. The flavor was quite mild and sweet; I think I'll add more cinnamon next time. The dough was really sticky and I had to add quite a bit of flour to knead it. Also mine were ready at 20 minutes; any longer and they would have burned. They look perfect though, and they slipped right out of the pan without sticking.

Beth's Spicy Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

Reviewed: Oct. 9, 2010
Good but not great. Too sweet, and too crumbly - most of the cookies broke as I removed them from the cookie sheets.

All-Bran Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars

Reviewed: Oct. 3, 2010
I was intrigued because this recipe only had one single star rating and no reviews. I thought, "Could it possibly be THAT bad?" Well unfortunately it was almost that bad. I followed the recipe almost exactly, except that I halved it. I didn't want to use half an egg, so I used the whole egg but omitted the water. I noticed half way through cooking that the edges were puffed up really high, but it was flat in the middle. After about 20 minutes it started to smell burned, so I took it out. The result was a toffee like mess around the edges, with a slightly more bar-like appearance in the middle. The overall texture is more candy-like. The taste is OK, not great but tolerable, but I can't cut it into bars and have to scrape bits of it out of the pan. I'm not looking forward to cleaning the pan later!

Curried Coconut Chicken

Reviewed: Sep. 29, 2010
I followed the recipe exactly, except that I used the whole onion, and simmered without a lid. I liked how easy this was to prepare, and overall the flavor was good. However it was too sweet; next time I'll only use one tablespoon of sugar. Plus the flavor was a bit one-note. Next time I'll increase the garlic and add some fresh ginger. Plus some veggies would be nice in this, maybe some red pepper, or potato. A good base recipe though.

Carrot Cake III

Reviewed: Sep. 16, 2010
With the icing it's five stars, but the cake on its own is quite bland and only worth three stars. I'm going to try it again using a bit more spice and some minced pineapple.

Mmm-Mmm Better Brownies

Reviewed: Sep. 8, 2010
Great texture! I made them exactly as written. I thought they needed just a touch more chocolate flavor, so next time I'll increase the cocoa and/or add some chopped chocolate.

Ocean Spray® Oatmeal Cranberry White Chocolate Chunk Cookies

Reviewed: Sep. 6, 2010
The first time I made these as written (except was adding craisins from a jumbo bag, so I just added the amount that looked right without measuring). They turned out rather bland, not sweet enough, almost salty. I just made them again, increasing the sugar by 50% and adding grated orange peel and a few tablespoons of orange juice, plus more craisins than last time. They were better, but almost too sweet. However they were still too floury/cakey, so next time I'll try adding more butter. The idea of the recipe is good, it just needs a bit of tinkering to make it truly great.

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies I

Reviewed: Sep. 3, 2010
Not sure what happened, the cookies came out tasting fine, but the consistancy was all wrong. Too crumbly; most of them broke when I removed them from the cookie sheets. I reduced the sugar by about a third, and they were still more than sweet enough. I increased the cinnamon and added a pinch of cloves. As some reviewers suggested I soaked the raisins first, not sure if that affected the texture. Also the cookies were burning at the edges but not cooked in the center after 9 minutes, so I think a lower cooking temperature would be better. Will try other oatmeal cookie recipes.

Too sugary (even after reducing the sugar), too vinegary (and I like vinegar) and too watery. Like a sweet pickle soup.

Carrot Cupcakes with White Chocolate Cream Cheese Icing

Reviewed: Sep. 29, 2009
Really good cupcakes! I found combination of the icing and the cupcake too sweet though. Next time I'll just make the cupcakes on their own, since they're moist and sweet enough without the icing.

This was just OK for me, and inedible for my husband. The cornbread seemed too sweet and heavy in this salad.
