I grew up in South Africa and started cooking the occassional family supper when I was 14 and haven't stopped since! I have two children age 10 and 7. My 10 year old is very interested in learning how to cook and helps me make a lot of suppers.
My favorite things to cook
I love cooking anything when I'm prepared - menu, ingredients, etc. My family know that if I've spent more than 1 minute staring into the pantry that it's not looking good - they're heading for the car already!
My favorite family cooking traditions
I don't really have any cooking traditions. Growing up, my parents being British, we would have the traditional Christmas dinners and Sunday roasts, but I've never followed that tradition at all. My mom was mortified when she came to stay with us ofr a while and I didn't cook a Sunday roast! I think the "family favorite" is my mom's Rice Pudding!
My cooking triumphs
I don't think I necessarily have one outstanding triumph....more lots of little ones! We have a supper club and I always turn to Allrecipes for my menu, as well as Sewing Club - usually brunch or cake recipes, and Bunco - usually a full meal with dessert too. My friends don't bother asking where I got my recipes from anymore - they know!! Allrecipes! My husband and kids used to complain that I would always go all-out when entertaining but not when cooking supper for them. So, I've started spending an hour on Sunday afternoon browsing through Allrecipes looking for some new ideas for the following week's menu and then go grocery shopping so I have everything ready come Monday morning. I print our all my recipes and show the family so they know what to expect, and for me too - I know when hubby will be home late due to a meeting, etc. Fortunately, my family are very appreciative of the work that goes into preparing a nice meal.
My cooking tragedies
Not long after we were married I had spent a long time slaving over the stove making my husband supper including haddock - a rather strong flavored fish. He just about keeled over! How was I to know he didn't eat fish??? He got up from his chair and scraped the whole supper into the bin! Needless to say, that was the last time I made fish for him - and it was the first and last time he EVER threw away his supper!
