About this Cook
Spoiled from my dad's gourmet cooking, I'm learning how to cook for myself on a college budget. Because of my schedule, I like to cook a complete meal at least once every weekend. There is so much to cooking, that I feel I will never learn to cook as well as my dad.
My favorite things to cook
I like to cook international food. Grilled chicken curry, pasta with garden tomatoes and fresh basil, crazy whitevalley girl japanese miso soup, hot african peanut soup and fried plantains.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Traditions are broken in my family. Every Thanksgiving my dad cooks a feast with a theme. Last year it was persian. The tradition seems to be that the whole family gathers and reconnects. Only my dad cooks, sweats and labors for hours and everyone waits to dive in. This is how he shows love. We're OK with it.
My cooking triumphs
I was really happy when I could saute mushrooms like my dad. (I have little patience.)
My cooking tragedies
I threw away a whole casserole dish, because I discovered that I don't like lamb in moussaka and I could not bear with the smell in the garbage can, nor clean the dish.

Green Tea Muffins
Just a warning: powdered matcha tea is very expensive. $30 for a small can. I tried just using regular green tea leaves (cutting open a tea bag) and the muffins were still good, but imparted no extra flavor.

Pepperoni Burgers
On Guy's big bite he fried up the pepperoni slices before adding into a lasagna, I imagine this might help bring out the flavor. Along with more garlic.

Jamaican Beans and Rice Dish
I found out the missing instruction behind this recipe and still cheated. Soak beans overnight. It's on the package instructions for the kidney beans. Also, I did add more water as it cooked. I could not let it burn. The flavor is OK with the fresh thyme, but I think I'll stick to my own way by cooking the beans and rice separately.
