About this Cook
My favorite family cooking traditions
My grandmother's Xmas Ball, she made it every year. Cream cheese, green peppers, pineapple, pecans all that good stuff. Other than that, my Aunt Renee, now passed away was a serious baker. She enjoyed the baking of cookies every Christmas.
My cooking triumphs
I taught myself how to bake white bread and now I almost never buy bread in the grocery store. And flan; I made 3 attempts and finally found a good recipe and how to get cheesecake to set properly
My cooking tragedies
White bread, flan, cracked cheesecake. My grandmother's motto: Persist until you get what you want.

Baked Flan
It is baking now and so far it smells marvelous! The recipe was simple and quick. Watching it done was most helpful. This is my third try at flan. The first attempt was a powdered Goya box of flan. The taste was good but that was it. Then I tried a recipe I got from MSN recipes (years and years ago) and it didn't bake all the way through but it tasted good. So with trepidation yet curiosity and just orneriness, I watched Beth make flan and I also used a blender (good strategy!) and this was the most promising. The glitch this time was that my baking pan has a leak the size of a finish nail in the bottom! So I caramelized more sugar and poured the remainder into a glass pan. The old metal pan is on the scrap pile now. I think I will not have any further trouble with flan. I would like to try different flavor extracts over time.

Black Magic Cake
My mom had her version of this recipe in an old "composition book" she used to keep, and I baked the cake tonight in cupcake form. Yes, the batter is thin so I funneled it into a plastic ketchup squirter, and just took off the top part to pour it into the paper cups. Also I doubled the vanilla and added a tsp of almond extract. On the facing page of her book, there was a recipe for English Caramel frosting (this I did not make but I improvised from store bought icing and a caramel additive, this time). She was a caramel addict. Delicious together. Very decadent.
