I am a newlywed living in a very rural area. We have a little farm and both work full time; so my week night cooking tends to be very quick and convenient. On days off though I love to make more extravagant meals.
My favorite things to cook
Bread is my favorite thing to cook; I find all the kneading, waiting, and watching to be very calming. But, we have turned over a new, healthier (lighter) leaf so I rarely make bread or any baking anymore. Instead I focus on the main course. We raise our own livestock and love to spend free time fishing; so there is always an abundance of meat in our deepfreeze. I love recipes that can be made in one skillet or dish; this means we eat a lot of stir fry, hash, and casseroles.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I learned at a very early age how to cook from my Mom and (very ukrainian) Grandmother. I still cook the same way my Mom does: by the seat of my pants. Neither of us follow recipes exactly as written. Instead we modify and experiment, using the ingedients we have on hand, or substituting for our preffered tastes. My earliest cooking memories are of punching down bread dough every sunday; pinching perogies, and hanging homeade pasta to dry.
