Manicotti Alla Romana

Reviewed: Feb. 1, 2008
Totally awesome. The white bechamel sauce used in this recipe is now my go to. It has so much flavor. This recipe is great to prepare ahead of time, refrigerate, and then serve right before company comes.

Grandmother's Buttermilk Cornbread

Reviewed: Nov. 2, 2005
Really good recipe. Great flavor & texture. I made it twice & cut it back to one egg though.....It was probably just me but I thought I could taste the eggs in it cause I'm paranoid about too many eggs. Sweet & golden & buttery, ( I poked holes & added more melted butter over the top after it was done). Great homemade cornbread.

Grandma VanDoren's White Bread

Reviewed: Jul. 2, 2005
Wonderful and very easy recipe. I didn't end up baking it for the full 35 minutes, but it was still excellent. My husband said that it was the best bread he's ever eaten, and he never wants store bought bread again.

Fried Apple Pies

Reviewed: Nov. 19, 2004
Really good recipe. Very simple and easy. I too mashed up only some of my apples to leave them a little bit chunky. I also used brown sugar and added a little nutmeg. I wonder how it would be if I used butter flavor crisco in the crust also. My husband said that these are definitely better than McDonalds applie pies.

Cowboy Mashed Potatoes

Reviewed: Nov. 18, 2004
I thought that they were okay. It was a good way to sneak in some extra vegetables. However the flavor didn't "pop" for me.

Apple Pie by Grandma Ople

Reviewed: Oct. 14, 2004
Wonderful and easy pie recipe. I wasn't sure that the flavorings would seep through to the apples, but they do. I would also recommend mixing half the apples, perhaps with MacIntosh or Gala since Granny Smith alone are too tart. If you do use Granny Smith, either mix some of the sauce with the apples, or toss them with sugar. I also added cinnamon and nutmeg to the sauce. I used the best & most flakey buttery crust in the world. Wonderful apple pie recipe and definately a keeper. Will be on my Thanksgiving table every year.

J.P.'s Big Daddy Biscuits

Reviewed: Sep. 1, 2004
I've made these several times and these biscuits are fluffy and rise really high. They're really good but you really do need to brush the tops with butter, or maybe add an extra 1/2 teaspoon of salt because they don't have much flavor on their own. Or omit the salt and substitute buttermilk for the regular milk and you'll have a really good biscuit. Thanks for the recipe Jim.

Supreme Strawberry Topping

Reviewed: Sep. 1, 2004
My husband absolutely loved this recipe. I served it over Big Jim's Biscuit recipe with Blue Bell Vanilla Ice Cream and whipped cream on top. He said it was the best strawberry shortcake he ever had.

Maria's Rice

Reviewed: Sep. 1, 2004
Great and easy recipe for rice. Pretty foolproof and excellent for Holidays and served with Beef entrees. I like to add extra chopped fresh mushrooms, (never canned)and grind some fresh black pepper in the rice. Can make on the stovetop but it's extremely easy in the oven.

Crispy and Creamy Doughnuts

Reviewed: Aug. 28, 2004
Excellent donut recipe. They melt in your mouth and the glaze is wonderful. I do agree that you may need to make more glaze because you'll want to keep dipping in it. And you also may need to use more flour than required. I found that making sure I sifted the flour made it extra tender.

Antipasto Pasta Salad

My husband absolutely this salad. I don't eat some of the ingredients in this so I didn't have any, but I'm told it was a great summer salad.

Apple Crisp III

Reviewed: Jun. 29, 2004
I really like how the crisp topping came out (don't care for the oatmeal) however this was WAY too sweet for me. I'd cut back on the sugar by half, it'll still be plenty sweet but you can taste the fruit more.

Award Winning Chili

Reviewed: Jun. 24, 2004
The chili had much too strong of a wine taste for me. The bacon & carrots didn't really seem to add anything to it also. I'll keep looking.

Oatmeal Dinner Rolls

Reviewed: Jun. 24, 2004
Excellent rolls. Stayed very moist and looked as good as those you may get in a restaurant. I also may try subing with some wheat flour to add even more fiber & keep them nice and wholesome. And were excellent the next day also. Didn't feel bad eating these. Felt like I was upping the fiber intake.

This was a good recipe, however I have had many salmon recipes that were much better. However, if you serve this no one will be disappointed.

Sesame Green Beans

Reviewed: Jun. 23, 2004
Excellent recipe!! A lot less fattening than simmered with bacon fat. I've made this a few times and found the key difference to be what kind of chicken broth you use. A cheap broth won't really enhance the flavor. Use something like Butterball's Chicken Broth or maybe Swansons.
