Ken's Perfect Hard Boiled Egg (And I Mean Perfect)

Reviewed: Jan. 17, 2014
Not perfect. I followed the recipe exactly and the yolks weren't all the way hard boiled. I wanted to try something new to see if it made for a better hard boiled egg, but this recipe was not successful.

Chocolate-Filled Crescents

Reviewed: Jan. 13, 2014
I made these following ann's suggestion of using Nutella instead of chocolate chips. My kids go nuts-crazy for these time and time again.

Quick and Easy Vegetable Soup

Reviewed: Jan. 10, 2014
Thank you for a vegetable soup recipe that does not have beef in it! I've made this two times and really like it. I used vegetable broth and cajun spice the first time (didn't have creole). I bought some creole seasoning for the second batch and like that better.

Parma Crisps

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2014
I printed 10 recipes for various garlic-type breads to serve with our Italian dinner last night. My husband picked this one and we both loved how wonderful these Parma Crisps were. We look forward to making these again and again. I did take Baking Nana's recommendation to slice them to 1/4" thickness instead of 1/2" and that was a good call.

Kentucky Biscuits

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2014
Pretty good texture, but not much on flavor. I used salted butter, but I think this could've used even more salt, along with more sugar and more buttermilk.

Roasted Cauliflower

Reviewed: Dec. 29, 2013
I've been wanting to roast cauliflower for some time now and am very happy to have found this recipe. I loved that I could roast the whole head intact instead of having to cut it into florets. I did use low-fat butter (Land O' Lakes spreadable) and used 1 t. dried dill instead of 1 T. fresh dill. The seasoning combination was great.

Winter Blossom's Often Requested Ham Salad

Reviewed: Dec. 29, 2013
This is pretty good. I used leftover "honeybaked"-style ham and some of the sweetness of that is taking over the relish, onion, and mustard flavoring. I will probably try to make this another time using smoked or boiled ham. REVISION: I increased this from 4 to 5 stars because after a couple of days in the frig, this tasted fantastic (even using the honey-baked)!

Beau Monde Dip

Reviewed: Dec. 29, 2013
Once you purchase the Beau Monde seasoning, this is worth making again and again. I started substituting dried minced onion for the fresh onion and it makes this even easier to prepare.

Baby Greens with a Warm Gorgonzola Dressing

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2013
Used pears in place of the bacon for a healthier spin. I've got a lot leftover (both salad and dressing), so I'm anxious to see how it is on Day 2. REVISED: Bumped this from 4 to 5 stars. The leftovers were great . . . glad that I kept the dressing separate from the salad and then just reheated the dressing in the microwave before drizzling over salad portion.

Christmas Red and Green Salad

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2013
I was expecting not to like this, but wanted to make it for the festive colors. It is actually very good and my family members liked it. I must admit that I had radishes in my hand at the grocery store, but they must have ended up in another shopper's cart (hope they like radishes!) because they weren't rung up on my receipt or in my vegetable bin when I went to make this yesterday morning. So, I added some halved grape tomatoes just before serving to give the salad some extra red. I do want to make this again, but actually use radishes. Also, I only got to make this about 6 hours ahead of our Christmas dinner, but it was still great. Overnight isn't necessarily necessary.

Jamie's Baked Brie

Reviewed: Dec. 23, 2013
I modified this, but wanted to rate the combination of the savory ingredients with the Brie, which was excellent. The shallot, garlic, white pepper, and sauvignon blanc (no vermouth) sauteed together and baked over the Brie was wonderful. I used miniature phyllo pastry shells (baked on parchment paper unfilled for 5 minutes at 350), then put a small cube of Brie in each shell and topped the Brie cubes with small amounts of the sauteed shallot/garlic mixture, then baked at 300 for 4 minutes until the Brie melted. These little tartlets were great!

Fast and Easy Creamed Spinach

Reviewed: Dec. 23, 2013
I used a thawed 10 oz. box of frozen spinach in place of the fresh spinach. Next time, I will increase the nutmeg a bit more and reduce the cayenne, but that is just personal preference.

Gurkensalat (German Cucumber Salad)

Reviewed: Dec. 16, 2013
I've never had this before, but made it for my daughter's class for their Germany Day event. Overall, I don't think the kids liked it, but my husband and I enjoyed the leftovers. I would definitely make this again in the summer when we have an abundance of cucumbers.

Perfect Pumpkin Pie

Reviewed: Dec. 12, 2013
Perfect Pumpkin Pie is Perfect! Instead of measuring the cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg, we just used 2 tsp. of pumpkin pie spice. We used the Butter Flaky Pie Crust recipe from this site for the crust. With an egg-white wash on the crust, these two paired for an excellent combination! Best part: no crack in the top of the pie! Woo hoo!

Butter Flaky Pie Crust

Reviewed: Dec. 12, 2013
I am not a baker, but decided to bake a pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving. I chose this recipe for the crust and it was delicious. There was a lot of cursing going on through the various steps and I think I ended up adding a LOT of water in step 1 and using a lot of waxed paper in step 2 and could've used a lot more flour for dusting my rolling pin in step 2, but it turned out great regardless of my unladylike behavior and numerous attempts to ruin it. I did use an egg white wash on the crust before filling and baking it.

Mushroom Slow Cooker Roast Beef

Reviewed: Dec. 12, 2013
Absolutely excellent! I also cut up 2 onions into rings and put them as the bottom layer below the mushrooms. Served this with roasted potatoes and roasted carrots. Planned to use the leftovers for sandwiches, but I left the leftovers sitting on my counter all night, and very unfortunately had to pitch them. I was really looking forward to those sandwiches, too. ARGH.

Tangy Pear and Blue Cheese Salad

Reviewed: Dec. 12, 2013
Yummy combination of flavors! I kept the dressing in a glass jar and just added it to the salad at the table to avoid the "overdressed" issue that others had.

Slow Cooker Turkey Breast

Reviewed: Dec. 12, 2013
Awesome turkey! We made this for Thanksgiving and it was stellar! I had some chicken broth leftover from another use, so I poured that in the crock pot at the beginning, as some folks had suggested, but it wasn't necessary. Stick to the recipe and you'll be delighted. Used the leftovers to make Turkey Salad Sandwiches (turkey, mayo, sliced red grapes, celery, and dillweed). That was fab, too!
