The World's Best Cook...and lil confused *me*
About this Cook
I'm the grand daughter and great grand daughter of cooks who could and 'likely' would have, not only been happy to pass on a kitchen full of tips to Martha Stewart that would have astounded her, they likely, ALL being teachers and quite the ladies, their country roots and workhorse surroundings, notwithstanding, they just might have given her a few truly serious lessons on "manners and decorum." LOL!!! Being the daughter of a cook , who, although she was painfully shy, she cook circles around Paula Deen. Yet- me, silly stupid me... I didn't pay the attention I should have to her skill! I was too busy being the resident writer, artist and dreamer in the family. NOW, in keeping with my dad's native roots.... I'm "she who thaws from freezer" yish!
My favorite things to cook
OBVIOUSLY- "survival" has gotten so much easier in this century....what with the advent of this button turns it "on" you say?? (kidding!) Research and the collection of wonderful recipes has made it possible to dig the knowledge that I "know" is buried deep inside my brain somewhere -out- I am SURE they taught me by virtue of having me under their feet all those years... I heard their words....because when I am forced to be in the kitchen.. (still) a detestable task to me...yet, I haven't screwed a meal up yet that I couldn't fix it back to "palatable." Either I'm channeling them (naaahhh) or they imparted seeds of knowledge in my baby brain that imbedded and have been waiting for me to "tend" they could grow. (The garden) I understand....I was always at home outside, under sun and sky, it was that 'always hot steamy kitchen' where I felt out of place and uncomfortable....much like a milk bucket under a bull. LOL!!!
My favorite family cooking traditions
Oh my God...ONLY one? It cannot be done. If they were all here...I loved them ALL...and cherished every get together with almost as much relish as a Christmas morning! We had dinner every Sunday and they were "events." Dinner at our house meant it was "suppertime" w/ the common blue checked tablecloth spread over the large table outside in warm weather under the ancient maple trees in the yard, and with the family wandering all around...carefree and happy! Enough home cooking coming out of that house to feed an army....and any stray visitors that happen to stop and stay..... Holidays were just the same, except in the house, near the hearth, with fire blazing brightly and warm. Family gathered. Love abounded..chatter bounced...and food flowed. It spelled family at my grand's farm. And in my still does.
My cooking triumphs
To re-create some small part, where ever I am at. In the city, in the my table. That is a COMPLETE success. For my guests and family to "feel" that feeling of warm hearth and love abounding at the table....hmph...THAT is success. That spells "family" to me.
My cooking tragedies
Hhahahaahha/ I STILL remember when I was about 9 years old and my cousin and I tried to cook a home made pizza in an electric skillet. Although she admired our attempt at cleaning the house by ourselves that day...and cooking alone....there was a casualty... It was never really called a tragedy. (it should have been tho) The skillet was given a burial that the back yard. My mom attended alone. And I swear I heard her humming Amazing Grace and softly sobbing to herself...... She loved that skillet. LOL!!!!!!! I didn't my best to never kill another pot or pan again after that..."for mama". hahhahah
