Grandma Ople's Apple Pie

Reviewed: Dec. 10, 2012
This recipe is such a huge hit with my family. I made it on Thanksgiving, and it was so good, my little sister demanded I make it for Hanukkah two weeks later! I stray slightly from the original recipe: I make my own pie dough (2 batches), brush the top cruse of the pie with an egg wash, use anywhere from 5-9 granny smith apples depending on the size of them, and I add healthy doses of vanilla extract and pumpkin pie spice to the caramel sauce mixture. Allowing the sauce to simmer on the stove allows the flavor of the sauce to develop. I also recommend allowing it to cool for several hours, and then warming it up when sliced so the juices have time to soak back into the pie. Using homemade dough makes this recipe a little more time-consuming, but it is truly worth it. This is a pie that those who try it won't soon forget.

Brown Sugar Smokies

Reviewed: Nov. 8, 2012
Oh. My. God. These were FANTASTIC!! I made only one package of smokies worth, and my guests were mad I didn't make more! I made these by securing the bacon with a toothpick and then smushed a fistful of brown sugar on each smokie. I have a cast iron skillet with grilling grooves that I put all the smokies on, which allowed for the fat and sugar to drip off. I cooked these at 350 for 45 minutes, and sprinkled brown sugar on them halfway through. If you are considering making these: DO IT!! You and your guests won't regret it!

Chef John's Clams Casino Dip

Reviewed: Nov. 8, 2012
This was fantastic! I added a lot more peppers than the recipe called for, and it made the dip "meatier", if that makes any sense. I left out the green onion and cooked with onion powder instead. This dip was popular with everyone at my dinner party, but it is definitely a treat due to the amount of bacon fat and cream cheese. I would make it again!

Spooky Halloween Eyeballs

Reviewed: Nov. 3, 2012
I made these for my fiance's Halloween work poutluck. These were so easy to make and form into eyeballs. They weren't sticky at all and I recommend putting them in the freezer before working with them. The only issue I had was working with the white chocolate- I will not blame the recipe for that! I overheated it and it wasn't liquidy-velvety smooth. I was, however, able to save it and the final product looked impressive and tasted delicious. My fiance brought home an empty container- that speaks for itself!

Maple Glazed Turkey Roast

Reviewed: Oct. 23, 2012
I edited this recipe for 1.5 lbs of turkey breast tenderloin strips. It was delicious and extremely easy to prepare. Despite the lack of a fatty skin, the tenderloins were moist and juicy. These are great flavors that you could use on other poultry. If you're looking for an easy weekday meal, give this one a try!

Maple Glazed Pork Loin

Reviewed: Oct. 10, 2012
I definitely finneagled with this recipe. I added four small granny smith apples large diced into the roasting pan. I also substituted the vinegar for soy sauce and added anentire stick of room temp butter versus half a stick (I don't normally cook like that, but I knew it would make a real nice glaze). I put all of the glaze ingredients in the roasting pan and stirred them up in there. I then put the pork loin in and tossed the loin around in the glaze. Baked it at the same temp and time as the recipe indicated. This was a WOW!! dish. My future husband said it was the best, juiciest, most delicious pork he's ever eaten. The apples were roasted and not too sweet, and the glaze was just heavenly. I threw two sweet potatoes in the over for a side and called it a night. I can't say enough great things about this recipe. It will definitely be a staple in our house!

Basic Flaky Pie Crust

Reviewed: Oct. 10, 2012
Super simple to make in the food processor and it tasted incredible. I added cinnamon to the dough because I used it to make an apple crisp. I will definitely make this again instead of buying pie crust!
