My family has grown over the years from 5 children to 10 grandchildren, one great-grandson, and another great-grandchild on the way! I've been cooking since I was 17, enjoying being not only the host of probably thousands of parties, but doing all the cooking and baking too! With my first cookbook, Better Homes and Gardens, I began my culinary journey and I'm not through yet! My skills have much improved over the years, until I wrote my own cookbook for my family and friends, at their insistence! One of my greatest joys is cooking for my family during all the holidays while enjoying their company.
My favorite things to cook
I love trying new recipes whether it be main dishes or desserts, but my favorite thing to cook is Spaghetti. I enjoy cooking new things and tweaking them to taste better. I don't think there is a recipe I can't improve on!
From baking breads, making delicious new sauces for fish, meat, and desserts, trying new French and Italian recipes, cooking with southern style, to finding new ways to improve on old recipes, making them healthier; these are just a few of the ways I like to cook.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I love cooking for all the holidays but my favorite time to cook is at Thanksgiving and Christmas. I begin early baking breads and wonderful pies, cookies, cakes, and candies. Many dishes can be frozen until ready to use and I take advantage of this time so I can do the main dishes without worrying about all the other wonderful items I enjoy making for the holidays. With my wonderful turkey with oyster stuffing for Thanksgiving and my delectable standing rib roast for Christmas, with all the trimmings, including my special jello that everyone insists on for every holiday, my family never goes home without some kind of goodie-bag! I also make the best apple, pumpkin, and mincemeat pies ever!
My cooking triumphs
When my eldest daughter told me she was getting married I knew I wanted to cater her wedding. I didn't realize over 200 guests would be invited. But being the trouper I am I scoured through many professional cookbooks, discovering many recipes perfect for a wedding dinner. After the dinner many people asked me to cater their affairs which led to somewhat of a career for awhile. This year my granddaughter asked me to bake her wedding cake and I spent 6 to 8 hours a day for two months online and at bookstores learning how to make the perfect wedding cake! By the time I finished learning and tweaking recipes I finally came up with a wonderful cake for her, decorated beautifully. There are so many things one can do in the culinary field that a lifetime can be spent creating new and wonderful dishes for friends and family or finding that little niche' and enjoying a career in the field.
My cooking tragedies
The worst thing I ever did was subject my little ones to my trial-and-error dinners! Some of them were so bad that I had no choice but to try again! Eventually I learned to make my own recipes without subjecting them first to my family! Cooking and baking my own recipes is my passion!
