About this Cook
I live on a cattle ranch, in the middle of nowhere, South Dakota. Oftentimes this poses a problem, since the nearest market is 35 miles away. Finding a lot of gourmet ingredients is also a an issue. No one around here caries Ancho Chili Powder. Lucky for me, Amazon.com will ship it. Here we raise our own beef, I garden and raise chickens for eggs. I grew up watching my mother cook with whatever she had on hand. I guess I've gotten good at improvisation.
My favorite things to cook
Seafood, steaks, Mexican food. Did I say Mexican food?
My favorite family cooking traditions
I love the holidays of Christmas and Thanksgiving; I'm always trying to change things up- and my mom likes the traditional. I've managed to get her to give in to a few things, however, like changing from traditional green bean casserole to a fresh mushroom and green bean casserole. Yum-O!
My cooking triumphs
I love it when I substitute something and it still turns out fabulous!

President Ford's Braised Eye Round Steak
I adjusted the recipe to make four servings since it is just me and my boyfriend. I also didn't have beef consomme on hand, or beef bullion so I used worcestershire sauce mixed with an australian shiraz. It was really good. My gravy got super thick and the boyfriend didn't add salt. He liked it and when you live with a man that raises beef for a living that's saying something. I think next time though, I'd make more sauce. The adjusted recipe called for 2/3 cup of wine and I ended up adding at least a cup of wine. I was also short thyme so I used basil instead. It was really very good. It'll definitely go on the menu again!

Bob's Stuffed Banana Peppers
I followed this recipe to the letter, save for the sausage part. I don't like Italian sausage (no offense to Bob!) so I used Jimmy Dean Hot sausage instead. It turned out so great! Banana peppers are one of my favorite kind of peppers and this was just, lovely!

Pork Tenderloin with Dijon Marsala Sauce
Easy and tastes like a million bucks! I have also substituted the marsala wine for coconut rum.
