Hi there - My name is Deb L. and I am one of the fun-lovin' Limbachs who are all somehow connected by food!  In an effort to preserve some of our family history and to bring us together, I wanted to start this blog to share some of the family recipes I have been carefully guarding over the MORE

About this Cook
I had the original Betty Crocker for Kids Cookbook when I was about 8 years old. After I got over the Easy Bake Oven phase, I started seriously cooking and baking at about 11 or 12 years old (when I joined 4-H and was trying to score my first blue ribbon!) Seventeen "Butter Cakes" later, I did get my blue, thanks to loads of help, suggestions and patience from my wonderful mom!
My favorite things to cook
Desserts for my husband, brunch, Weight Watcher and diabetic friendly foods, snacks, a nice meal on the grill!
My favorite family cooking traditions
In addition to turkey and all of the fixin's, I love eating our traditional German sauerkraut and bacon at Thanksgiving. My grandmother also started a bunny cake tradition at Easter that we loved as kids and still love now.
My cooking triumphs
I spent untold amounts of money and time to make a gingerbread house for a contest one time. It looked so beautiful! (despite a patch job on the candy laden roof) Although I didn't win, it was great fun. I really enjoyed the process and learned how much money you can truly spend on cooking and baking!
My cooking tragedies
I would rather tell about my mom's cooking tragedy, since she is one of the best cooks. As a young teen, she lovingly prepared an apple pie for the family dinner. Proudly presenting it at dessert time, her grandfather Teddy oohed and ahhhd over it. After springing from his chair to make a stirring speech about the pie's beauty, he dug his fork in with gusto. "Up to my lips and through my gums, look out Teddy, here she comes!" he exclaimed proudly. He stuffed his mouth full with a huge bite. My mother anxiously awaited his approval...and then he made a terrible face and spit it out! She had accidentally put salt into the pie instead of sugar! I can just picture how my grandmother was doubled over shrieking with laughter, tears running down her cheeks. Even though he ended up being fine, my poor mom has never heard the end of this episode and still laughs to this day about it.

Whole Grain Waffles
Delicious! Will put this in my regular breakfast rotation! I made similar changes to those suggested: swapped out the canola for applesauce (making it 1/2 c applesauce and no canola oil), swapped old fashioned oats for flax (didn't have flax), used wheat bran for wheat germ and whole wheat flour for the whole wheat pastry flour. Also, instead of 1T sugar, used 2t Splenda and 1 t brown sugar. Sifted flour for added fluffiness. Batter slightly too runny so would start with 1 and 1/2 c milk and add a bit more as needed to thin it down.

Fresh Cherry Crisp
LOVED IT! I made some changes others suggested and incorporated my own. I ended up with more cherries and less topping: 4 and 1/2 c cherries (I used frozen), 3/4 white sugar, 1/4 cup tapioca (instead of flour) and 1 t vanilla. For topping, 1/2 c flour, 1/2 c rolled oats,1/4 c white sugar, 1/2 c brown sugar. Leave out shortening. Bake in 8x8 or 9x9 for 50-60 minutes. Less topping and more cherries make me a happy girl. Serve with vanilla ice cream. My hubby ate three helpings on his go-round.

Country Green Beans
Loved these. Due to diet restrictions, I used 1/2 T light butter instead of 1/4 c butter and 1 slice cooked bacon instead of the ham. Still delicious! Agree that using veggie or chicken broth instead of water gives them more flavor. YUM - thanks for a great way to fix green beans!
