About this Cook
Hello! I am originally from Lahore, the city of gardens, beatiful Mughal architecture, innumerable street urchins ("Buy a flower, pretty princess. May you find the prince of your dreams.") and awesome music! Currently living in Chicago, I enjoy all sorts of cuisines and love to experiment. Trying to be a better vegetarian and gathering the courage to become vegan. How can I give up my deserts?!!! I wish I had paid attention to my mom when she tried to teach me her art, instead of ignoring it, with extreme contempt, for being a conspiracy to make me better wife material. I was right, but I should have been more prescient. So, in trying to compensate for my delayed interest, I am willing to try anything.
My favorite things to cook
Traditional Pakistani/Indian dishes, like different types of bariyani and kardahis, curries, etc. I love making quick and yummy snacks. Also, Thai and Italian delicacies. Oh, and I love baking irresistable cakes and breads and sweet yummies.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My parents are great cooks and food connoisseurs. They have an immense amount of knowledge about each and every minute detail and method. My mother poured her heart and soul into everyday cooking for us brats. One of the special things she used to make is Hareesa, a traditional Kashmiri dish, handed down from generation to generation. Talk about an heirloom! It is basically a winter specialty and I remember my mom and uncle (the muscleman!) stirring the huge pot throughout the night, as everyone else waited impatiently for it to be ready by morning. Then, we would go with abu ji (dad) to get fresh tandoori kulcha (special bread) and gobble it all up. I could eat it every day!!! Sigh! Its not vegetarian:-(
My cooking triumphs
Hmmm... I think beignets.
My cooking tragedies
Beignets- Part I!!!

Beignets
This was quiet an experience. I had to figure out what size worked for me, but they were wonderful when I got the hang of it. I surprised my Zasha with these, as he always talks about "Beignets from Brocato's" in New Orleans, of which he has very fond childhood memories. Against such tough expectations, this recipe measured up. And that's saying a lot!

Absolute Mexican Cornbread
This was sooo good. I used it to make cornbread squares with a minced beef filling and it turned out great.
