About this Cook
I'm a country girl with a country attitude in my cooking. I like doing things the way my great grandparents did in the early 1900's. I cook on a old fashioned wood cook stove most of the year (gets hot in the summertime). I love nature and natural ingredients in my cooking. I prefer organic ingredients or straight out of my garden ingredients. Fresh ground corn for my cornbread and beans out of the garden cooking on a wood stove in the middle of a snow storm suits my fancy.
My favorite things to cook
Mom's fudge at Christmastime, Best Ever Chocolate cake, pot roast and potatoes, sweet potato casserole, pineapple casserole, are a few of my favorites.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Getting up on Christmas morning and letting dad cook breakfast. A hot breakfast (cooked on a wood stove) with country ham or venison tenderloin, fresh biscuits and gravy, fresh free range eggs (from our own chickens), with homemade applebutter and/or honey (harvested from our own bees).
My cooking triumphs
A triumph for me was learning to cook with healthier ingredients. So I went back to the basics and started thinking and cooking like I thought my grandparents would have. I can a lot of our foods from our garden, so I know what ingredients are in them. (None of this not being able to read over half of the ingredients on a label on the food bought at the store). Learning to can some of those old recipes that I grew up eating at grandma's house. Also, learning to can cakes and meats ready to eat out of the jar. These are great when you go camping or the power goes out and you want something fast and simple to eat.
My cooking tragedies
Getting dad to leave the wood stove alone while I'm cooking! He always wants to add more wood and is always burning my cakes when I'm baking. Stay out of the kitchen dad when I'm cooking! (Unless it's Christmas).
