Taste: New Mom Broccoli Kugel 2 stars (not the recipe’s fault)

Ease of Preparation: 4 stars

Cost: 5 stars

I learned a new word this week: Kugel or crustless quiche. This was another recipe that I was really looking forward to making. It seemed easy enough although my onions never did turn “dark brown.” I finished whipping this together and put it in the oven.

As the instructions said, I put the timer on 90 minutes and forgot about it. My family was starving and kept asking me how much longer. When there were 22 minutes left, my husband got impatient and looked in the oven.

The picture does not convey how burnt it actually looked. My mom would have said that it’s not burnt it’s brown, but my heart sank just the same. It was my first disaster.

Even as we ate it, we couldn’t help but think how good it would have been had it been cooked correctly. Once you cut off the burnt pieces, the middle tasted pretty good, which is why it got 2 stars even though it was burnt.

I will definitely make this again. I will adjust the time that I check it to about 45 minutes though.

I'm with Doc! I promised my Dad a spectacular special meal the other night and it was one of the worst I had made in months. So disappointing I know!!! Did the recipe have any reviews? I learn a lot from those. If no one else said the timing was off, it could be your oven, which is important to know. We're you off drinking margaritas and fell asleep? Have done that once too. ;)~ You really are a trooper, but I swear it gets easier.

Several reviews mentioned they only baked from 40-60 min. and her timing is off on the onions too, IMO. As you go along you will find you have to dig a bit deeper and read several reviews because the number of stars frequently do not reflect the recipe as written. Sorry it didn't work but this was not your error!

Agree with BigShotsMom not your error. I made a cake today that directed 60 to 70 minutes bake time. I am hoping it isn't going to be dry because it was so done with 20 minutes to go. It didn't raise much either so fingers crossed. I have enjoyed your post very much. Keep on cooking.

@Doc Thanks! That means a lot. @AZ93 I will now have to start checking reviews for tips and hints. Thanks for the tip. The margarita thing sounds like something I would do. @BigShotsMom I'm just know learning this. I figured that if it had great reviews that the recipe would be great too. I didn't realize that people review based off of how their version turned out. Live and learn. @Joey Thank you for the encouragement. I hope your cake turns out moist.
