About this Cook
I am married and my husband and I are very busy around Christmas time. He is a "real bearded" Santa and I sometimes accompany him as Mrs. Claus. We have two grown children, son Jim is in my profile photo, and daughter Krista. Both are married. Our daughter lives in CA with her husband and son (18, yikes) and our son lives in TN with his wife and daughter.
My favorite things to cook
Many of the gourmet items I've learned to prepare while attending local cooking classes with my daughter. I enjoy baking cookies, cake, pies and bread. Stuffed tenderloin, marinated flank steak, fillet with bernaise, flavorful potato dishes, followed by cookies, homemade ice cream, creme brulee, and the easy ones - rum cake and lemon cake - both hubby-favorets.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Several of the cookies I make are from my mother's recipes. I also make some of the childhood favorites I learned at the side of my mom and grandma. I became the "official" family baker at a young age.
My cooking triumphs
I catered my father's wedding after my mom passed away. My daughter and I enjoyed preparing another special meal of garlic rubbed toasted baguette topped with fresh bruschetta, stuffed chicken breasts, sides and homemade lemon curd tarts topped with fresh raspberry. Yum!
My cooking tragedies
Oh boy. Made a beautiful brunch for guests and decided I could just "stack" the french toast in a 13x9" since I didn't have a larger pan at that time. It was made with a custard sauce, refrigerated over night and then covered with a brown sugar, butter and nut topping before baking. Needless to say it overflowed, burned on the oven, set off the smoke alarm and the security system's fire alarm - a big red bell like the ones they had on the outside walls in elementary school. I pictured my guests trying to park among the fire trucks! Fortunately, we were able to air out the house well enough that the bell stopped clanging, the smoke cleared and the buffet was served with a smile.;=)

Halloween Fruit Apple Teeth Treats
So cute! I went to a cooking class that recommended dipping fruit in lemon/lime soda to keep it from turning brown. A good alternative to using lemon juice. Sugar free soda can be used for those watching sugar/weight.

Coffee Date Bread
My husband's word for this bread was "scrumptious"! I wasn't sure if my baking soda was "young" enough so I added 1 tsp. baking powder. I'm picky about my date nut bread and this is the best I've tasted. Thanks for sharing!

Ruth's Grandma's Pie Crust
Ruth's Grandma and I must have been related. I use this recipe and love it - I also divide the crust (if not using all), wrap in plastic wrap and put in freezer bag for later use. Good to have on hand!
