Sandy's Chocolate Cake

Reviewed: May 23, 2012
OMG WOW!!! I am a full-time baker/cake decorator and therefore usually immune to cake, but even I couldnt keep my hands out of this one! I reduced the serving size to 9 which easily filled a 9x13 pan. The only change I made was to sub 1 cup buttermilk + 1/3 cup butter (microwave 30 sec and mix) for the sour cream. Baked in a glass pan even the edges came out soft and fluffy and cutting it was a dream. It was dense but still moist and fluffy and this will definitely become my go-to chocolate cake for shaped cakes! thank you so much for sharing!!

Buttercream Icing

Reviewed: Jan. 5, 2012
wooooo!!! This recipe is so easy to work with. Ive always cringed when clients ask for buttercream decorations because I find fondant much easier to use, but this frosting might be just the thing to finally make me learn buttercream roses (maybe).

Crispy Barbequed Tofu Slices

Reviewed: Nov. 6, 2011
This recipe is ridiculous! Ive always loved bbq sauce, but being a vegetarian has really limited what I can do with it, but this recipe has completely changed that! I loved it so much, after the first time I tried it, I made it three days in a row!

Slow Cooker Lasagna

Reviewed: Dec. 2, 2010
Really good stuff! I used vegan beef crumbles instead of the actual meat called for, and skipped the skillet, just dumped everything into the crock pot and let it go. I was surprised it all fit in my 4qt pot, would probably work better in a bigger one.

Old Fashioned Coconut Cream Pie

Reviewed: Sep. 3, 2010
Did as others suggested and used cornstarch in place of flour, also 3 yolks in place of 2 whole eggs makes a HUGE difference. When I did the whole eggs i ended up straining out the thick bits that kept floating to the top which was pretty nasty. Also used about half a bag of flaked coconut in the pie which gave it a great texture. Sooo good!

Chocolate Chip Toffee Bars

Reviewed: Dec. 17, 2009
I think these are ok. However, I went to my husbands corporate christmas party last night and everyone he introduced me to said, "ohhhhh! Youre the one who makes those "things" they are incredible!!" So, for having a stellar reputation before I even walk through the door this recipe gets 5 stars.

Lemon Cake with Lemon Filling and Lemon Butter Frosting

Reviewed: Apr. 4, 2009
Im glad I started making this recipe the day before I needed it. The cake was VERY heavy and had a weird corn bread kind of taste/texture. I did not use it and ran out for boxed mixes the next morning. The curd was very sour, but tasted like real lemon as opposed to a sugary lemonaid type taste. The frosting was awesome. I ended up doing 5 layers of cake (3 boxes of white cake mix) with two layers of curd and two layers of frosting in between. I doubled the curd and frosting recipes and had enough to do all of the layers and frost the whole thing - including a crumb coat. I had to drive the cake up the 405 freeway and the top 4 layers ended up sliding off the bottom curd layer, and then when I was serving the cake the top layer fell off the other curd layer - its slippery! Someone suggested using a few wooden dowels to hold it all in place. Will definitely make the curd/frosting again, skip the cake.

Felix K.'s 'Don't even try to say these aren't the best you've ever eaten, because they are' Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: Mar. 23, 2009
This is the perfect cookie texture I have been searching for! I made my cookies out of 2T of dough and did not flatten, they spread evenly and slid right off my worn, old pans(that never happens!)The taste was good, my husband was REALLY happy with them, I perfer the more complex flavors in the Mrs Fields recipe on this site though. I used the big Guittard chips, which didnt work so well with the size of these, next time Ill use regular sized chips. Oh just as I was about to submit this review, my husband looked up from his computer and said, "by the way, those cookies are what sugary dreams are made of. They're soooo good!" hahaha

Bryan's Sweet and Hot Tomato Pasta Sauce

Reviewed: Jan. 6, 2009
This is the stuff italian-food dreams are made of. Soooo delicious, and quick to put together. I used crushed red pepper, omitted the celery salt and ended up using slightly less than 3/4 c. sugar. Also, used crushed tomatos with italian herbs. I think my husband would love this over some italian sausage.

Homemade Black Bean Veggie Burgers

Reviewed: Jan. 2, 2009
WOW! I am just starting to cook vegetarian cuisine (Its my new years resolution!) and this is wonderful, even my meat eating husband ate two! When making the patties I used about 3/4 cup bread crumbs and substituted green taco sauce and 1/4 red and 1/4 green peppers. I also cooked these quite a bit longer than called for, about 17 minutes on each side. I served these on toasted whole wheat buns with organic cheese, lettuce and tomato, but what *really* made it awesome was reviewer Jamie Ks suggestion of chipotle mayo, the patties themselves are a little bland, but coupled with the mayo these were delicious!

White Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 21, 2008
These are great (and this is coming from a girl who doesn like white chocolate or nuts in baked goods)! I used an entire bag of white choco chips and then chopped another 1/2 bag that had melted. I also used quick oats instead of regular. I Made these extra big, and they didnt spread at all, so I flattened them out a bit 1/2 way through cooking. They reminded me of something you would get in Starbucks.

Portobello Penne Pasta Casserole

Reviewed: Oct. 27, 2008
As written this recipe is very good. Definitely do not leave out the soy sauce. I think next time, in addition to mozarella, I will add different cheeses to give it a more complex flavor.

Spinach and Tortellini Salad

Reviewed: Sep. 1, 2008
This pasta salad is great! I took it to a 4-family get together where, oddly, everyone brought pasta salad and this got great reviews. Its good to let the flavors sit together for awhile before serving, I prefer to eat it room temperature or even a little warm, but my husband liked it cold.

Outrageous Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: Jul. 30, 2008
These cookies are pretty fabulous. The dough is super easy to work with when done exactly as the recipe says. I found that 9 minutes was the perfect baking time for me, and since they do not spread I tapped them down with the bottom of a measuring cup just as they came out of the oven the removed them quickly from the pan. I used quick cooking oats and the texture was good, but would definitely try with rolled oats for a more pronounced texture.

Best Ever Pie Crust

Reviewed: Jul. 25, 2008
Alright, ive made this recipe at least 15 times in the past month (preparing for a 4th of July baking contest -- I won!) after trying various ratios of these ingredients the perfect combination I found is to keep everything the same EXCEPT leave out 1 tbsp of shortening (use butter flavored shortening) and as others have suggested chill everything, bowl, spoons, pastry fork, etc. Using the full amt of shortening makes this dough too fragile to work with, and leaving out two tbsp makes it gross like grocery store crust, but leaving out just that one tbsp makes this crust flaky and delicious and easy to work with -- I even perfected a latice top!

Peanut Butter Cocoa No-Bake Cookies

Reviewed: Jul. 16, 2008
Perfect easy recipe as these ingredients are usually on hand. Wonderful for a quick chocolate fix! I added shredded coconut instead of peanuts and spread them all out on a wax-paper lined cookie sheet to be cut into bars instead of drops.

Best Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: Jan. 7, 2008
This recipe is fabulous! I made it like one previous reviewer suggested with 2 cups flour and 1 cup oatmeal (measure first then grind into powder) and added 4 oz (1/2 bag) of toffee bits. Baked for 12 minutes.
