My favorite things to cook
I like fresh, local foods. Cooking a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables is very important to me. It's not easy to get fresh produce in all seasons in rural Nova Scotia, but I try to make good use of our garden and freezer. I love to try out international recipes so I try to incorporate something different into my weekly menus.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My family always had a vegetable garden. I remember my father always wanting to preserve food for the winter. Throughout the hot Ontario summers, my mother would be freezing veggies, making jams and canning fruit. We would be eating our own produce all winter! I still do some preserving. Those treasured summer memories have always remained.
My cooking triumphs
One summer I made over 100 jars of jams and jellies for a wedding. Every guest was to receive one. Some went away with many jars! It was a very enjoyable project and people seemed to enjoy the preserves very much. It gave me a chance to try out the more unusual recipes with every kind of fruit imaginable!
My cooking tragedies
I can't make pancakes to save my life! Fortunately, my husband is very expert at this task & makes nice fluffy ones, topped with fresh fruit and yogurt!

Spiced Banana Cake
I really liked this banana cake recipe. It made a lovely moist cake with a bit of oat chewiness that I found appealing, besides being good for you. I did make a couple of substitutions. The spice I chose to use was Vietnamese cinnamon which is very intense. I also used Greek yogurt in place of the sour cream because that was what I had. The cake turned out perfectly! Thanks for such a good and successful recipe!

Spinach and Feta Pita Bake
This is an excellent fast dinner. It's just what I like. No meat...lots of veggies...and some cheese. It's a very adaptable recipe so really the toppings could be whatever one wishes. Thanks for sharing this dinner idea!

Rich Pasta for the Poor Kitchen
This is such a wonderful, basic recipe for delicious pasta that will go with anything. The only change I made was to add some olive oil because I used much less butter. That was because of our age, not necessarily because of the taste. If I were still young it would have been butter all the way!!! This is nice and simple & so fresh tasting. All one needs is meat or fish and some veggies to make this a wonderful complete meal. Thanks for the recipe!
