Often I will do something a second time 'cause the first time I don't have a feel for it, hence never be too disappointed by a recipe, no matter how well written they are often tips of the ice berg of an intuitive tradition going back and back and back... maybe to the "big bang".
My cooking tragedies
First cake I made as a teen. Mom said for icing about 1/4 C Milk to 2 C Powdered sugar, and then the rest, like vanilla or some cocoa.
I got it reversed, 2 C milk and 1/4 C powdered suger.
I looked at the runny mess even after I poured the whole box of sugar in hoping for real icing, and was sitting crying when my big bother said here, and kind of poured it over the cake.
It pooled at the bottom but harded over the cake and hey, we had a brother and sister team who invented a positive out of a negative.
