I am 13 and love to cook! I've been cooking ever since I was old enough to stir pancake batter, going from baking mixes to full, gourmet meals. I even started my own small "business" baking for people! It's always a huge disappointment when I get the urge to cook something but my mom says no, and always a great excitement when she agrees. Oh, and one more thing: I am probably Alton Brown's #1 fan!!!
My favorite things to cook
I don't know exactly why, but I love baking. I enjoy making pastries, breads, cakes, pies, desserts, you name it! I love to try out new techniques decorating cupcakes and cakes, baking pies, making crusts, and so much more!!
My favorite family cooking traditions
I always get excited around Thanksgiving when everyone in the family pitches in to make the dinner. This year, I made the bread (trust me, it's usually several dishes, not one!!). P.S. I have been using the "Amish White Bread" by Peg from this site. It's to die for!
My cooking triumphs
This past summer, my neighbor's daughter had a birthday party. At the time, I was going strong in my cupcake business. Our neighbor asked me to do appetizers for her daughter's party, and I immediately accepted, ecstatic. I made stuffed strawberries, shaped sandwiches, and chocolate-drizzled fruit kebobs. However, I have a bad habit of overestimating my skills and underestimating my time and capability limits. I was so stressed! The sandwiches, so beautifully painted in my mind, were a disaster! I learned a huge lesson that day about not saying, "Oh, that's easy enough, of course I can do that!" However, I managed to get everything done, and everyone loved it.
My cooking tragedies
Other than the disastrous sandwich mishap in my "Triumphs" section, one tragedy was my first lemon meringue pie. I was using a boxed mix, so I don't know if it was old or what, but while my "meringue" portion of the pie turned out beautifully, it topped a lemon soup. For some reason that I still don't know, my pie refused to set up! I will say, though, that it was the best lemon-pie soup (and only) that I have ever had!
