I took my first step toward permanent weight loss last month when I had a consultation with a bariatric surgeon and signed on for a Lap Band.  I won't have the surgery for a few more months but am now focusing on getting the right mindset so I'll have good habits in place when that time gets here.

I want to do this right - I want to be free from high blood pressure, be more flexible and strong so I won't be held back from any activities in my life, AND I want to feel better about how I look.  The lap band is slower weight loss, with less risk of malnutrition.  It is up to me to make good food choices, exercise, stay hydrated, get the rest I need and to take good care of my body.

I am reclaiming my body.  It's time to get back to me again; to ditch feeling self-conscious and cumbersome.  I have dreams to fulfill.  I want to feel good about myself, fully BE myself, and release the artist inside.  It's time!

I'll be blogging about my strategies, my struggles, my strengths...about the whole experience.  I love allrecipes.com - I've visited this site for years.  I'll rely on the recipes and suggestions to find new recipes to try and to find the best quality food sources that I'll want to eat once I've had the surgery.  High quality nutrition in small quantities.  I won't be eating nearly as much as I do now, so I want it to be really good and really good for me...and things my family will enjoy too.

So, here's to day number one!  The first day of the rest of our lives!  :-)

Good for you! When you are discouraged, and when you're feeling like you just can't do it, please remember, first you have a family that cares about you, second you have a community of people on AR that do care about you as well, and last, but by no means least, there is a God who cares about you too. I have struggled with my weight for about 15 years now. Finally it is starting to go down. Some day I'll be free of the CPAP and the BP meds. I am very interested in how you're doing. I'll be watching for your blog posts.

I have lost 40lbs most of it due to me not drinking alcohol, but I try to eat good foods. I did try to get the gastric bypass but my insurance would not pay for it. My sister is going for gastric bypass and she needs it because she can not keep the weight off and she has many health issues. two of my wife's relatives had it done about 5 years ago, and they are doing fine now days.

Losing weight is easy.....it's the mental part getting there that is difficult. Making lifestyle changes, eating well, watching portion sizes, getting enough exercises, cutting back your stress levels etc. Those are life long commitments!! Take care of yourself first and the rest will fall into place. Good Luck!!

By the way...fifty is fun!!! Everything that you used to say before fifty was just B.S., when you turn fifty, it's wisdom!!

You go girl! I am two weeks into my new life with the lap band. For me it took almost loosing everything in my life that meant something to me, to make the decesion. It took one week to feel good after the surgery. I found out for myself as you will how liberating it is to have such a strong tool work with me as I learn new things each day. I have made a few mistakes, but quickly write them down and go over the basics of success again and again, chew 15 times and put the fork down, wait a few minutes before another bite, no liquids 30 min. before or 30 minutes after a meal. And portion size is no more than a TOTAL of 4 to 6 oz at a meal. It should take me 30 minutes to complete a lunch or dinner meal. 20 years of bad eating habits don't go away overnight. But you mentioned getting off the BP meds. I am at half the dose I was two weeks ago! My hunger is SO different with this band. For example, one egg satisfys me for breakfast. I love to cook, it is my passion. So I have been having fun making healthy, yet delishous food not only for me but for my husband as well. I purposely had the surgery before Christmas so I could start the New Year off with this new lease on life feeling I have. I wish you a healthy life and a Happy New Year! -Jodi

I'm finally within 2-3 weeks of my surgery. I thought it would never get here! I'll get my band either Friday, March 29th or the following Friday, April 5th. I appreciate your comments so much! Great advice and support.
