The minute I added that tablespoon of salt (against my better judgement) was the minute my lasagne went from hopeful, to beyond rescue. A tablespoon on top of a pile of tomato-y ingredients and cheeses already replete with salt! The more it simmered, the more concentrated the salt and fennel flavours became. The worst part was that this embarrassing failure was my contribution to an important Christmas party. Not sure what has me more upset: what an incompetent chef I appeared to be in front of all my peers, or, how much money I had to shell out to be rewarded with this excessively unfair distinction.
