About this Cook
I am a mother of 4 kids, and am expecting my 5th child. The oldest kid is 7 years old, and so we have a crazy but fun household. I am homeschooling my children, and they continually amaze me with how smart they are. I love to draw, take photographs, and cook.
My favorite things to cook
I love cooking breads. I am obsessed with health, and try to use mostly whole wheat flour. I find it fun to experiment with recipes, and rarely make the same recipe twice. I like trying out new things. I am great at cooking gourmet on a tight budget. (My husband loves to brag to his friends that I can feed a family of 6 on $200 a month.)
My favorite family cooking traditions
One of my favorite memories growing up is that of coming home from school and smelling the delicious aroma of fresh cooked bread. I loved to cut off a slice and slather butter and jelly all over it. I have tried to make lots of homemade bread for my own family also. I usually make it several times a week.
My cooking triumphs
Thanksgiving 2007 I decided that it was time that I attempted something dramatic and exciting for the dessert that I was in charge of bringing. I made a fabulous pumpkin cake that had was layered with a delicious cream filling. It was topped with carmel. When everyone saw it they oooooohed and ahhhhhhed. They told me that it looked like something from Martha Stewart. I was really pleased that I had gotten that reaction. It boosted my confidence in my cooking abilities.
My cooking tragedies
When I was in college I really liked to experiment with food, and none of my roomates would touch a thing that I made. I once made a soup that was so disgusting that even I couldn't eat it, but the guy that I was dating ate the whole thing and said that it was absolutely delicious.

Russian Cabbage Borscht
Absolutely delicious! I omitted the tomato puree, because one of my kids doesn't like tomatoes. It was still wonderful! My youngest children didn't like it because it was red from the beets, but everyone else loved it. Very healthy. Very good.

Creamy Frosting
I have tried this recipe twice and it has not come out good. I don't think that I will try it again.

Golden Yam Brownies
Absolutely wonderful!!!! I actually had a funny experience. I made this recipe and was surprised at how totally greasy and sickeningly oily it was. Then I realized that I had accidentally doubled the butter, oops! I tried making it again a few days later and was pleasantly surprised that it was as good as everyone said. I also added 1 teaspoon of Siagon Cinnamon (a spicy cinnamon that tastes like red hot candies. It's available at Costco). They were sooooooo gooooooood! I also used a large can of yams instead of shredding them. My daughter who despises sweet potatoes, loved these (of course I didn't tell her that there were sweet potatoes/yams in them - hehe).
