About this Cook
I am a 63-year-old widow. I live with my daughter and her 3 kids. My 89-yr-old mom lives with us, and is an Alzheimer's Patient. I have a total of 5 grandchildren, including 4 1/2 year-old twins. We all live within 10 miles of each other, and spend all the big holidays together.
My favorite things to cook
I love to make meat dishes, for instance, I try to vary my meatloaf recipe to come up with the perfect ground beef main dish. I am looking forward to trying out all the meatloaf recipes on this site, then improving on them.
My favorite family cooking traditions
As my mother is at the stage in Alzheimer's that makes her not want to travel, Thanksgivings and Christmas are always held at our house. We always try to have a new dish that will wow the rest of the family. Not that we are slouches when it comes to doing just a turkey, but it is nice to impress the appetites that already expect perfection.
My cooking triumphs
My daughter and I were watching Emeril one day before Christmas, and "borrowed" his recipe for Stuffed Shells. We made it for a side dish for the family Christmas dinner, and had to give EVERYONE the recipe. We called it an instant success, and expect it will be served at all family getherings in the furure.
My cooking tragedies
Once, I used stale yeast for Raised Doughnuts. I still hear about the hockey pucks! And that was over 20 years ago! The recipe was to make 18 doughnuts, but I got about 40, instead. No-one who came to visit was immune...everyone had to eat one. Flavor-wise they were delicious, but not so much for lightness.
