The Last "Word"

I had to say goodbye to my baby kitty, Logan, today.  As painful as it was to let her go I am sure she is free if pain.  She would have been 20 this summer.  The last cat I had lived to be 19.  My vet says it must be something in the water over here! :)  Logan was a little poof of fur when she found me!  She was covered in fleas and I couldn't give her meds because she was too little.  I just picked and prayed she wouldn't infest my house and other felines!  My other cat was less than thrilled with the new addition but tolerated her for many years! ( Too tired to do the math:)  I think back on all the things that have happened the last twenty years and how much support and love that little fuzzball gave me without saying a word.  I think there is a lot we can learn from our furry family members.  She has taught me tons and I am going to miss her beyond belief.  I am OK and I am happy she didn't have to suffer.  I just happen to read Mother Ann's blog last night about her Missy!<   It confirmed what I already knew I had to do!  Hubs kept saying one more day.... but I knew it was time.  This was the first time DH ever had to go thru making the actual decision.  He was a real trooper and had me laughing while I am sitting on the  floor holding my cat waiting for the inevitable.  That's pretty good!  He has created a "Logan" voice so she will be with me for a long time, along with all the fur she had shed this spring!
All I can ask is when you know it is time DON'T wait.  She may have held on a couple more days or even weeks, but it would have hurt just as much as it did today.
Oh, and Logan got the last word..... She hissed at the vet~She still had a little fight in her!  :)

I am sorry for your loss. My thoughts are with you.

My heart hurts for you. My grand dame is 17 and I thank God for every day she stays with me. She too has been my silent support system through so much. Take solace in knowing you gave her a good life. {{HUGS}}

I like that phrase... silent support system, so true! Hope she gives you many years of happiness, BSM!

Thanks, Marie! She was a sweety!

Shanon - I, like your husband, wanted to just keep saying "one more day" - but like you knew when it was Time. They let us know with their eyes and their actions. It is such a sad, sad thing to go through but you can take comfort in knowing she is no longer suffering and loves you even more for that. Your kitty lived a good long life and has you to thank for that!

That's such a hard decision to make but Mother Ann's poem said it. If you love them then you know what to do because they have always been there for you. 20 years of sharing and it was all because of you. I'm sorry for your loss.

Thanks, Mother Ann. I think God gives us signs and for me it was your blog! Perfect timing.

Thanks! She had a great life, Cat, and she was so sweet!

I know you had to make a very tough yet very responsible decision and I hope you find comfort knowing that you gave Logan 20 of love and companionship as much as she gave them to you.

Had to make that tough decision twice this year (my dog and then cat) I know what you mean about them being there with support and love through the years. Peace to you and yours.

Oh, irayd8..... 2x is way too much in one year! Bless your heart and Thank you!
Apr. 3, 2012 11:56 am
Thanks, Mike! You're too, sweet!

I've had to make the decision to give my furbabies that final, precious gift of peace more times than I care to count. It never gets any easier. Our hearts hurt and we cry because we miss their precious presence in our lives. They never truly leave us, though, and I honestly believe we will be together again someday. Hold tight to your memories of Logan and know that one day your heart will heal enough to allow another little pouf of fur to enter in.

I am so sorry to hear of this. I truly understand I had to pit my best fried down after 16 years.
Apr. 3, 2012 6:33 pm
You are right, Keri... there wasn't anything easy about it. Thank you!
Apr. 3, 2012 6:34 pm
Thanks, Bon. I can't believe she is gone. :(

Aaaawe. I'm so sorry, Shannon. What a difficult thing to do. Twenty years of nice memories. {Hugs}

I, too, understand your loss. I have had to put down 2 kitties over the years. One was 19 and the other, 16. It is a loss that stays with you, but so does all your sweet memories of them. Peace and comfort to your family.

So sorry Shanon. We do get so attached to our furry friends. Hugs!

Apr. 4, 2012 12:16 pm
Thanks, scooter- it really does stay with you!

They give you unconditional love, and it's just never easy. I, too, have been fortunate to have cats who have lived to a very old age, and it's so hard to say goodbye. But I think we all reach that point when we know it's the right and compassionate thing to do. Hold on to the memories, and know that you made the right decision even though you're feeling her loss right now.

I am so sorry Shanon - "She may have held on a couple more days or even weeks, but it would have hurt just as much as it did today." These are very wise words. (((hugs))) to you.

Thanks, lutzflcat! I have lots of great memories of her and tons of PiCS!:)

Shanon, you already know you did the right thing but it still doesn't feel good not to have her in your house. As you know, she will always be in your heart. Thanks for sharing and I hope your grief turns to happy memories soon!
Apr. 5, 2012 6:40 pm
Shanon K I am so sorry you lost your long time family member. They truly are a gift to us and their love sustains us during the good and the bad times. Thanks for being such a great care taker for this furry little soul.
Apr. 5, 2012 7:58 pm
Shanon - - if Logan could speak she would say "Thank you for loving me so much from the first day to the last day - only and always there was love" There is no greater gift.
Apr. 6, 2012 2:57 am
Shanon, sorry for your loss and know you have many great memories. Our pets depend on us and it's the last gift we can give them. How funny it was your kitty hissed....

There is a definite void in the house, even with 6 dogs that I am babysitting..... The sad thing was she was purring the entire time, well until the vet made her mad! Thanks for all the sweet messages. You all are awesome!
Apr. 10, 2012 11:52 am
Our pets are more loyal to us and sometimes stay with us longer than our children do. I know you will miss Logan and will never forget your love she had for you and you for her.
Apr. 11, 2012 4:19 pm
She was loyal to the end! Thanks for your kind words, char!

About Me
I live in Nashville, TN. I like to listen to music and go out to eat when I am not cooking! I am now an RE addict. This site has helped broaden my horizons in the kitchen and I have "met" alot of great people on this site!!!! I love dark chocolate and any kind of cool kitchen gadgets. Can't stand allspice or anything pumpkin!!!!!
My favorite things to cook
Pasta sauce, Seafood, southern dishes - meatloaf, mashed potatoes, fried chicken! I am now trying to cook healthier recipes!
My favorite family cooking traditions
My favorite one started Thanksgiving 2008! My sis and nephew came down to join my hubs and I for dinner! It was literally one of the best dinners I ever made or ate! We all lazied around (well, I did in between cooking.) We sat outside and just PIGGED OUT! We looked around and noticed we were all in are sweats with no make up, no cleaning up~That is when Skanksgiving was born!
