Do you have a favorite cookbook you've never used for cooking? Mine is called The Art of Chinese Cooking by the Benedictine Sisters of Peking (before it became Beijing again) with illustrations by M. Kuwata. My mom got it decades ago in Japan and I read it cover to cover, again and again, when… MORE

I didn't cook dinner. I chopped and I sliced and I rolled, but at no time did fire come into it. Not that I have anything against fire. Fire is good. It certainly makes eating most animal protein less creepy. And truth be told, one component of my dinner came into contact with heat at some… MORE

A friend tells me she tried to have dim sum this weekend in the International District, only to find the restaurants completely overwhelmed by everyone else in Seattle who had the same idea. It’s the Lunar New Year, after all--The Year of the Ox—a year said to be characterized by prosperity… MORE

I had a wok-free kitchen until a couple of years ago. If you just snorted in disbelief, I don’t blame you. What’s worse is I’m mostly Asian. I know. Let’s move on.If you’re a true believer and already rock the wok, you won’t be surprised to hear that it’s become one of my kitchen essentials.… MORE

About Me
Two working adults and a kid in school. Someone has to cook and that someone is usually me. *sigh*
My favorite things to cook
Whatever makes my family smile while they're eating.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I cook, they clean up after me. It's the kind of tradition I can fully embrace.
My cooking triumphs
No one has asked me to stop yet.
My cooking tragedies
When I was 13, I made pecan rolls for my family. The recipe called for 8 refrigerator biscuits but the package held 10. My mom asked me what I did with the other 2. Judging from the look on her face, "I threw them away" wasn't the right answer.
