Jewish Apple Cake II

Reviewed: Jan. 10, 2008
I followed the recipe exactly, but I think next time I make it I am for sure going to add more apples like others suggested. Also, I realized I ran out of cinnamon while I was in the middle of making this so I subed with all-spice and I think the all-spice worked really well with the apple flavor. I think I'm going to make it with all spice from now on actually. Overall a great recipe. It has a really nice light sweet flavor and it's great for people with dairy allergies because there is no dairy in it.

Bill's Sausage Gravy

Reviewed: Jan. 10, 2008
I was not that impressed with this, I just thought it was kind of bland and the maple sausage just gave it a flavor that I didn't care for. I thought the gravy could have used more flavor. It just basically tasted like flour and milk to me.

Mmm-Mmm Better Brownies

Reviewed: Jan. 10, 2008
These hit the spot. I had a craving for brownies like you would not even believe and these were just amazingly good. I made mine with melted butter rather than oil because I was out of oil and they turned out fine. These are the gooey kind of brownies, not the cake kind. The only thing I can complain about is the serving size was a bit small since I was feeding four children, my husband, and myself. I will for sure double the recipe next time I make it. Yummmmm!

My Best Clam Chowder

Reviewed: Dec. 16, 2007
This was okay. The recipe says to cook the veggies in the clam juice and meanwhile make the cream sauce. The way the recipe was written it makes it sound like the veggies should cook in the amount of time it take to make the cream sauce but they don't; it takes quite a bit longer for the veggies to get soft (I would say about 10-15 mins). Also, I think next time I make it I will use shallots rather than onions because they give cream soups a really nice richness or I will use the onions and add some garlic. Overall, a nice clam chowder recipe, I just need to make some small adjustments the next time I make it.

Beth's Spicy Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 12, 2007
These were so wonderful. The clove gives these cookies the perfect flavor. Everyone loved them in my house. I stuck with the recipe and can't think of a single thing I would change about it. I think one thing I may try next time is using dried cranberries rather than raisens.

Homesteader Cornbread

Reviewed: Dec. 12, 2007
I was not that impressed with this corn bread. I thought it came out very dense and kind of dry and the left-over were even dryer. I like my corn bread light and fluffy and this for sure was not. The taste was pretty good, just the texture wasn't. My husband really liked it though.

Microwave Oven Peanut Brittle

Reviewed: Dec. 12, 2007
I made four batches of this for holiday gifts for friends and clients and everyone is asking me for the recipe. It seriously took no time at all to whip up four batches. This is the easiest, yummiest treat ever. Tastes just as good, if not better, than anything you could buy from the store.

Clone of a Cinnabon

Reviewed: Dec. 12, 2007
I don't know what I can say about these that hasn't already been said. I just wanted to add to the bunch of reviews that these are fantastic! The daycare kiddos that I take care of helped me make these and this was so fun for us all to make and everyone just gobbled them up before you could say 'cinnabon'. I gave some to their parents and they couldn't stop talking about how good they were too. Everyone now thinks I'm like this super baker lol!! Yummy yum yum!

Jif® Peanut Butter Blossoms

Reviewed: Dec. 12, 2007
Oh my gosh these are so addictive. I really loved them just as they are but my husband just thought they were okay and needed more peanut butter flavor...I don't know, I guess it's just a matter of taste. I thought they were perfect and could stop eating the darn things. They were very quick and easy to make. I made these with my daycare kids that I take care of and it's a great baking project for kids to help out on.

Spinach Quiche

Reviewed: Dec. 12, 2007
I could not stop eating this. Wow is this good! Everyone, even my nine month old baby, loved this quiche. It's very easy to make and so yummy. I think next time I make it I may cut the cheese like in half and use a bit less butter so I wont feel like I have to do 50 stomach crunches after I eat it.

Beef Barley Vegetable Soup

Reviewed: Dec. 10, 2007
This was okay. I skipped the step of slow cooking a roast and just bought chopped up stew beef and added some lean ground beef. I also didn't add the water and bouillon but instead added two quarts of beef broth (my soup was a lot meatier than the recipe called for). I added two chopped up potatoes and I also added some garlic, a little bit of oregano and basil for flavor. This is a good base for a beef barley soup/stew, but I think as written it was a bit bland and I had to add a bit more flavor to it.

Chili I

Reviewed: Dec. 7, 2007
I don't know what I can say about this chili that has not already been said. It is fantastic! Probably like everyone else here, I was quite intrigued yet VERY dubious of the ingredients. Coffee, beer, and cocoa would be the last things I would have ever thought to put in chili but boy did they all work. The chili does not taste like beer or coffee or cocoa though. All the flavors sort of meld together nicely to creat a new unique flavorful chili. Not one of the flavors is overbearing. It's just the right bit of sweetness, just the right bit of savory, and just the right bit of spicy. My husband said it was the best chili he's ever had and my four year-old, who normally isn't a big fan of chili, had four helpings and didn't find it to be too spicy. This is for sure a keeper!

Restaurant-Style Zuppa Toscana

Reviewed: Nov. 24, 2007
This is a dead ringer. I used to work for a certain nameless restaurant that served a soup just like this, and this recipe is spot on to it. This is my favorite soup served at that nameless restaurant so I had to try this recipe. This was a huge hit and so easy to make. I made a few changes...first, I didn't bake sausage links I just bought ground Italian sausage and browned it with the onions, two, I cooked the bacon seperate so I wouldn't have to pick it out of the onions as the recipe suggests, three, I added a whole can of chicken stock, four, I added more cream, five, I added a pinch of thyme and basil (not in the nameless restaurants soup...but I like those flavors so I added it to mine). Really great soup that I will for sure make again.

Cheddar Bay Biscuits

Reviewed: Nov. 22, 2007
Per other suggestions I added some onion salt, garlic powder and parsley to the dough and I put in 1 cup of cheese and put a bit of cheese on top before putting them in the oven. They came out perfect. So easy and so great. Just like the restaurant.

Cream Corn Like No Other

Reviewed: Nov. 22, 2007
I brought this to my cousins house today for Thanksgiving dinner and boy was this a hit. Everyone LOVED it! In fact, this side dish got more raves than any other dish. I will for sure be making this again. So easy to make and so flavorful. I followed the recipe exactly and there isn't anything I would change about it.

Jay's Signature Pizza Crust

Reviewed: Nov. 20, 2007
This was so good we have decided to start home-made-pizza-Friday at our house. No more calling out for pizza. My husband and I both like a bit of sweetness to our crust, so we're going to try adding a bit of honey to the dough next time.

Kraut Bierocks

Reviewed: Nov. 18, 2007
As others have stated, you need more flour than the recipe asks. I added an additional cup, so my total flour was five cups. Other than that, I think this is a great recipe!!

Swedish Meatballs

Reviewed: Nov. 13, 2007
Normally I write reviews on the recipes only I cook, but this was one recipe my husband actually cooked. Since I know he will never come on here to write a review on it, I will. This was amazing. My husband followed the recipe exactly except for not using the juices from the meatballs in sauce. This was so full of rich wonderful flavor. Will for sure make it again. Wonderful

Restaurant-Style Hashbrown Casserole

Reviewed: Nov. 12, 2007
This is really good! I'm looking for a recipe that is like the Cracker Barrel hashbrown casserole. This isn't really it, but it's still really good. I think I may add some breakfast sausage in the mix and maybe some bell peppers next time I make it. Good stuff.
