About this Cook
I'm Cuban. I spend alot of time reading poetry and writing it. I also paint; mostly abstract. Working on still life. I do spend alot of time in the kitchen, however. I enjoy playing with different ingredients and seeing what I can come up with.
My favorite things to cook
Cuban dishes such as Congri, tostones, chuleta, bistec empanizado. I do alot of Puerto Rican food as well. Currently trying to learn a good alcapurria, which is mashed yucca (cassava) stuffed with ground meat or seafood. Sort of like a fritter but round like a dumpling... if that makes any sense. lol. Mediterranean cuisine is up here too. I also enjoy baking breads and cakes - but not the fancy Martha Stewart looking ones.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Weekend ginormous breakfasts. Pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, muffins, etc. I love it! But my kitchen doesn't. :-/
My cooking triumphs
My friends and I have to cook for a get together once a year. Last year I had to make some Congri which is black beans with rice and all the hispanic type ingredients. Well.. I thought I had all the ingredients at home but I did not and it was already too late for me to go to the store, the night BEFORE the get together. So I had to make do with what I had. I made the rice and the beans were still kinda hard. I added more water and it worked. But then the rice had no flavor. So I then added about a whole bottle of red wine, and almost a cup of garlic. It was alot of rice, by the way, I tried it and it was alright. I didn't make it to the get together but a few days later everyone that went was asking me for the recipe! All my friends said they loved it and that other people there were asking for who made it! PHEW!
My cooking tragedies
When I was very young, I had my own little ghetto apt. and had a boyfriend coming to visit for the first time. I hadn't really cooked anything before so I was going on blind. I ended up making sticky rice balls b/c the rice was made with too much water. Threw them away and then threw together another pot of rice. He came over and while he was eating the food... pulled out an extremely long strand of my hair from his fork full of food. He was grossed out but to be nice he kept eating. Swallow me earth moment. Don't know if that's the kind of tragedy this section asks for but I would say that's a big one.
