About this Cook
I'm an ex-pat new mom of a beautiful and rambunctious 7 month old that loves to keep me on my toes! One of my pleasures is making sure this little one has a healthy, home cooked diet that focusing on nutrition rather than "just feeding" her.
My favorite things to cook
I've really been inspired by Asian cooking for the last few years. I just love the combinations of flavors! I have to admit, I also love using new and exciting ingredients.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I have fond memories of my father's corned beef and cabbage suppers and his famous baked beans with homemade molasses bread served with a piece of sharp cheddar on the side. The crock pot with the recipe has been passed down in my family for over 90 years!
My cooking triumphs
I once made puff pastry from scratch and in turned out beautifully! I still hold that memory in high regard, but I don't know that I'll be doing that again anytime soon. I've never worked so hard for a recipe in my life! My arms still hurt from rolling that cold dough!
My cooking tragedies
Shortly after my husband and I first met, we had a few friends over from his office for supper. I made a chocolate mouse recipe from an old Julia Child cook book and misread the amount of sugar it required. Lets just say I'm glad they all had good dental plans after that. I have a real sweet tooth, and I could not get it down. But when I think back on their facial expressions when they first tasted this "cavities in a cup" dessert it was worth it!...oh...if I only had a camera!

Japanese Style Deep Fried Shrimp
Wow! These are by far the best tasting fried shrimp I've ever eaten. My husband is a bit of a food snob and he devoured every last one. This is a recipe that I will make again and again. It's fast, super easy and the finished product is very impressive. I followed the recipe with the exception on the flour and panko, which I reduced by half. Turned out to be the right amount with little waste. Perfect!

Dash's Donair
I'm a born and raised Halagonian, but now live in Europe. While pregnant, I would crave donairs all the time, so I always made extra to have on hand in the freezer for those 2am cravings. Since I now have lots of practice making this recipe, (too much I'm sure) I have found through trial and error that you can achieve a better texture to the finished product if you mix the meat mixture in the food processor. This makes the cooked meat much more dense (like the real deal back home) and less like typical meat loaf that your Grandma makes. You can get a nice thin slice this way. I also put the sliced meat in the frying pan for a few minute to get that slight crispy texture that the original donairs had. (Before the electric shaver machine became the standard..blah.) Awesome recipe! Don't forget to dip you bread in water and fry/heat it in the pan with the meat! If you have extra sauce, why not try another Halifax take-out favorite...garlic fingers. Yum!
