so, here I am - sitting at my computer after midnight. I have always wanted to start a blog about cooking, and I guess tonight is the night!

I love food.  I grew up in a Sicilian/Polish family, and learned that when you feed a body good food, you feed the soul. I've been surrounded by great cooks my whole life.  I started cooking at age 11 when my newly divorced Mom had to join the work force.  I took over all the cooking in my house for my Mom and three additional siblings. 

I've learned that good food, made with good ingredients and a lot of love, can truly be a healing thing.  Now in my late fourties, I fully understand the reason why I cook.  I cook for therapy, for artistic expression, but mostly to show love.

So, I'll be posting from time to time, a new recipe, a story or two that inspire me, or a moment of inspiration that produced a great meal or two.

Great first blog! You and I have alot in common, I too started cooking at a young age and my Grandma always said that you had to cook with love in your heart, so I too do it to show my love. Looking forward to reading your future blogs. Keep 'em coming!!

My great grandparents on my father's side were immigrants, from Italy, though dad is specific about being "Sicilian"- so when people ask me my heritage and I say Sicilian they sometimes don't even know what that is. I had a friend that described it as "Snobby Italian". Happy cooking!

wow, I haven't checked in here for awhile, but THANK YOU for the positive comments! It's been a crazy summer! The "snobby Italian" comment made me laugh out loud! Here in Indiana, we're winding down our summer and my son starts his first year of High School next week - where does the time go? He made the HS Marching Band, which results in a HUGE appetite at the end of a long day of marching practice! He's in a "chicken caesar salad groove", and wants to eat that almost every day. It's cool, it's crisp and it's not too filling, so I find ways to mix it up. Today, I diced everything really small and put it inside a steamed pita...he loved it! For any of you that have sons, and you feel them "slipping away" from you as they reach their teens, I've found that my cooking always brings him back to me, and it brings some of his friends too! We just got back from a trip to visit my Dad in North Carolina, and there's nothing like cooking with your family...the smells, the laughter, the fighting over spices....ahhh, I love being Italian! so, it's a new year! I decided to take a leap of faith this year. I've enrolled in Culinary School! I will be 50 on May 23rd, and my very first day of college will be on May 28th! Am I crazy?! We have a local Junior college here that offers an Associate degree, and I decided that I really want to put the word "Chef" in front of my name! My dream is to become a private chef or caterer ~ specializing in "farm to fork" cuisine, and keeping true to my Italian heritage. Being an insulin diabetic as well, it will be my mission to inspire people to cook food that feeds the soul, but keeps your body healthy and happy! So, for any of you who have gone to culinary school, I would appreciate any advice you can give!

My favorite things to cook
I'm more of a cook than a baker, but I love to cook Italian (being Sicilian in heritage). My dream is to someday open a breakfast/lunch diner - open at 6am, close at 2pm. Use all my Dad & Grandmother's best recipes....maybebsomeday....
My favorite family cooking traditions
I love cooking for the Holidays, baking cookies, making traditional Italian dishes. I am blessed to have a husband and a 16 year old son, who both love to try anything I cook! We laugh at the "misses", but we rejoice in the "successes"!
My cooking triumphs
When we have an especially tasty meal at a restaurant, the "challenge" is on for me to go home and re-create it! I love it when I can actually make it better than the restaurant!
My cooking tragedies
I made a batch of broccoli-cheese soup that was horrific, and my boys will never let me forget it! I need to redeem myself one of these days...so any recipes would be greatly appreciated!
