GRITS: Girl Raised In The South!
About this Cook
Southern cooking is in my blood. If it is Southern, I can cook it!
My favorite things to cook
I love to cook almost anything!
My favorite family cooking traditions
Each Sunday after church, my family would go over to my grandparent's house: "Granny & Pa Paw's" to eat lunch. As we opened the door, the best smells would poor out of their home! Roast beef, home-made whipped potatoes with gravy, fresh black-eyed peas, turnip greens with pepper sauce, fried okra, silver queen corn on the cob and corn bread (never ever made with sugar!) was my favorite meal. Granny is still alive (78 years old) and still cooking delicious home-cooked meals! I hope to be like her one day with my grandchildren and great-grandchildren!
My cooking triumphs
Getting one of my recipes published on this site. I hope to have more published in the future!
My cooking tragedies
When I was in high school, my best friend and I were going to make home-made fried chicken for our boyfriends. We had never really cooked that much before, but we were sure we could do it. We followed the recipe to a “T” except we made one BIG mistake. We accidentally substituted condensed milk for evaporated milk. We fried them up and they looked BEAUTIFUL! They were browned to perfection and so crispy-looking. We brought them on our picnic and placed them on our boyfriend's plates. They both took big bites as we looked on with pride. Their faces turned from happiness to disgust as soon as the meat entered their mouths. The outside was nauseating candied chicken skin and the meat inside was still raw! Yuck!!! We had to leave our picnic and drive to KFC. How embarrassing!

Brownie Biscotti
I consider myself to be an expert baker. I followed the recipe's directions exactly. After the first bake, the bread completely crumbled as I tried to cut it. I tried various knives to make sure it wasn't the knife, too. A COMPLETE disaster. Time to figure out a plan B for teacher's gifts! :(

Classic Bran Muffins
FABULOUS! I followed the directions except for the fact that I split the batter in half. I added 1 tsp of cinnamon, 1/4 cup of raisins, 1/8 cup dried cherries and 2 T chopped pecans to one half. I added 1/4 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips to the other half. WOW! Both versions are amazing! I can't decide which one I like better. My kids ate one of each and loved them. They are VERY picky eaters!

No Roll Pie Crust I
Fabulous! Easy! Seriously took five minutes to make a double batch! I used canola oil and unbleached flour. Best with savory dishes verses sweet. I poked it with a fork all over and blind baked it for a shepard's pie. Everyone had seconds! YUM!
