Plum Clafouti

Reviewed: Sep. 15, 2005
I made this for company and it was very easy and good. I did reduce the lemon peel as suggested. I liked that it wasn't too sweet and had a texture similar to creme caramel, which is a favourite. What made it really good was topping it with a plum sauce my husband made with our remaining fruit. He cooked pitted plums down with a bit of water and then sweetened it to taste. Served warm, it was divine. I actually made it again the next day, to see if it was that good, and it was. I am going to try this recipe using apples, brown sugar and a caramel sauce. Stay tuned.

Apple and Tomato Chutney

Reviewed: Oct. 9, 2007
Made a very inaccurate version of this and it was delicious. Had three wizened apples and two spongy tomates on my counter accusing me. I cooked chopped apples in small amount of water, added chopped peeled toms, a small handful of finely chopped red onion-- NO mustard seeds no curry--. Added 1/4 cup sugar, few shakes cayenne, salt and nutmeg, handful of sunmaids and a splosh of white vinegar. Simmered 5 minutes and served with curry (so avoided curry powder in chutney) Really good! Will definately 'fake' this recipe in future. Gotta love one you can be this careless with and still get a good result

Hash Brown Hot Dish Stuffed Bell Peppers

Reviewed: Dec. 3, 2007
My family all enjoyed this. I found the mixed ingredients looked a bit dry and uninviting, so added the better part of a can of Heinz tomato soup to moisten and flavou - I think this was an important addition as it held it all together. I also added about a tsp of cumin instead of just a pinch. My kids usually only like peppers raw on a veggie plate or in Greek Salad, so this was a victory. The 10 min. soak in boiling water nicely prepared the peppers for a quick baking, but they were still firm enough to stuff. I will try stuffing them with Spanish Rice on another occasion. Thanks for the inspiration!

Banana Crumb Muffins

Reviewed: Jan. 30, 2008
Great recipe, but be sure to double it: Only makes about 10 good sized muffins. After doubling, I added 1 cup quick oats for a little extra texture and nutrition. Also, no need to double the crumb topping. Single recipe easily tops a double batch of muffins with about one rounded tsp per muffin. Too much topping is probably why some reviewers have ended up with a 'sticky' muffin. Mine were perfect. Will make these again soon.

Cocoa Oatmeal Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 2, 2005
These were very good. I love coconut, so used (only) two cups quick oats and added one cup sweetened coconut that I had on hand. Also substituted chocolate chips for the raisins. These two additions made the cookie much sweeter that it would have been, but that's how I like 'em. Sort of like a chocolate haystack, but because of the oats, you can pretend these are good for you.

Slow Cooker Cranberry Pork

Reviewed: Jan. 21, 2008
I thought this was a great dish. As suggested by others, I seasoned my pork butt boneless chops well and browned them first. I never add onions to a slow cooker, as I find the long cooking time makes changes and strengthens their flavour to the point that it overwhelms the food. I added one T cornstarch at the beginning and needed a second to thicken the gravy at the end. We made paninis with the leftover, adding some purple onion and mozzerella, then used the left over sauce for dipping. Two great meals, very little trouble. Thanks for the recipe. I will definately make this again.

Pumpkin Loaf

Reviewed: Oct. 9, 2007
Easy and good. Very similar to what Starbucks is selling just now. Am glad I had some left over pumpkin to spur me to find this recipe. I lowered flour to 1.5 cups and added .5 cups of quick oats because everything tastes better with oats in it. The result is a slightly less cakey version, which I prefer. Better for me too! Next time I will sneak in a Tbsp or two of bran as well.

Boilermaker Tailgate Chili

Reviewed: Jan. 30, 2007
Funny to see this as the recipe of the day as I just made it for the first time two weeks ago. Many more ingredients and more trouble than the recipe I learned from my mom, but worth it. I don't think the canned spicy chili beans are available in my area, so I used 4 cans of kidney beans and one can of pork and beans, for a touch of sweetness. I was a bit intimidated by the list of spicy ingred. and since I wanted my kids to eat it I cut back the jalapeno and tabasco quite a bit and left the cayenne out altogether. It had a bit of bite - I wouldn't have minded a bit more- but we all liked it. Sounds weird, but we served it with a dollop of potato salad on top, and it was a great combination! I will definately make this again.

Farm Macaroons

Reviewed: Aug. 31, 2012
Love these. Make them all the time so better share a review. A sweet, weightless, treat. I make them small - 20 to a large cookie sheet. They freeze beautifully in zip locks then in tupperware to protect them. Very different but just as good as the heavy chewy version macaroon that uses sweetened condensed milk. But more elegant if you are doing a special event or tea

Bonnie's New Year's Beef Dip

Reviewed: Jul. 30, 2012
This was really delicious. Beef dip is a favourite around our house and this had a ton of flavour. I didn't have the rosemary and I used roughly a half packet of onion soup mix in 10 oz water instead of a can. Turned out great! Highly recommend
