Homemade Ginger Ale

Reviewed: May 8, 2006
I know this recipe works because it's identical to the one that I already use! I put at LEAST 2 Tbs of ginger root in mine because I love ginger. Because it's a bit difficult to put the grated ginger into those small-mouth bottles, you can soak the grated ginger overnight in a separate container, strain it, and then pour it into the 2-ltr bottle together with the other ingredients. It works either way! Beats store-bought ginger ale by many miles and of course is much cheaper. The only(little)thing I would like to see changed is using something besides regular yeast so that it won't have that slight yeasty taste. Is there anything else that can be used to give it the needed carbonation? Does brewer's yeast have that same taste??

The Ultimate Pasta Salad

Reviewed: May 21, 2006
This LOOKS 5-star, so I went ahead and rated it! I got hungry just reading the recipe and reviews. I might try adding some thin cream cheese(that we get here in Brazil)or even plain yogurt so that it won't be as dry-as one reviewer complained.

Cinnamon Swirl Bread

Reviewed: May 13, 2006
This shouldn't be called bread but, rather, coffee cake or sweet bread. But as it is, it turned out really well and is delicious! I made it a 2nd time and increased the eggs to 2, the oil to 1/2 cp butter, decreased the milk to 3/4 cp, and added 1 tsp vanilla. I also added 1/4 cp chopped peanuts to the cinnamon sugar mixture. It turned out better yet! So the original recipe is an excellent basic one to which you can make your own changes. Thanks, Bettina Bryant!

Broccoli Casserole III

Reviewed: May 26, 2006
After reading the reviews, I decided to just make it as much as possible like the recipe and decide for myself. I didn't have frozen broccoli, so used fresh and added about 1/4 cp of the liquid that was used to cook the broccoli into the casserole. I didn't have the little round crackers either, so I just used the square saltines-type crackers that I had on hand. Everything turned out perfectly. I don't think that a single thing needs to be changed in this recipe!

Lemon Custard Pudding Cake

Reviewed: Apr. 30, 2006
How about 6 stars?! This recipe is really good, it's amazing how the cake forms on top of the pudding. I don't know what "lemon zest" is, so I just added more lemon juice and it was great!

No-Crust Spinach Quiche

Reviewed: May 13, 2006
I wasn't sure if this recipe would turn out right since it didn't have any flour, bread, etc...but it did, and perfectly! I put the eggs and spinach in the blender(don't have a processor)so the spinach would be in smaller pieces. I also added about 1/4 cup of milk just for flavor. The opinion of my 15-yr-old son is my main test for whether a recipe is good. He loved it!

Breakfast Casserole

Reviewed: Jun. 14, 2012
These breakfast casseroles are always a hit. I also use the recipe as a basis for others. I just made this one with broccoli and cubed chicken instead of sausage. Wonderful!

The Meatball that Fell Off the Table

Reviewed: May 26, 2006
I found these meatballs to be quite tasty-in a different sort of way. I'm glad I only put 1/2 tsp of the nutmeg, though, as someone suggested. I didn't have the mushroom soup, so I just made a white sauce and cooked it for a few minutes with the meatballs, which flavored the sauce just right. My husband put catchup on them, so I made him eat some just as they were so that he could help me rate the recipe. He gave a thumbs-up, so that probably means 5-stars!

Sweet Candied Orange and Lemon Peel

Reviewed: Aug. 21, 2013
I made mine with tangerine peels. Don't know if that makes a difference but mine were a bit on the bitter side. I scraped off the white pith before I cooked the peels.

Pizza Dough I

Reviewed: Apr. 27, 2006
This is especially good for when you don't have time to do all that kneading and waiting for it to rise 2 times! The texture was good, crispy on the outside, although I think it could use a bit less flour.

Homemade Vegetable Juice Cocktail

Reviewed: May 27, 2006
I downsized this recipe considerably, so maybe that's one reason why it seemed to not be perfect, although it's good. Also, I don't know if some of my veggies were the same size as the recipe asks for. After all, there are different sizes of green peppers, carrots, etc! I'll probably try it again soon, that's how much I liked it.

Bowler Beef Marinade

Reviewed: May 30, 2006
This was OK, but I didn't grill it, just stove-cooked it, so maybe that's why it wasn't as it should be. Also, I didn't have soy sauce so I used a small amount of worchester sauce. I should try it again to genuinely test it...and grill it next time!

Crazy Crust Pizza Dough

Reviewed: Apr. 12, 2008
I was hoping I could put 5 stars, but it stuck in the pan so badly, I couldn't. I made it exactly like the recipe even though I was tempted to make a couple of the changes that others made. But I thought I'd give the recipe a fair chance. Don't know what made mine stick. Otherwise, it was fairly good.

Oatmeal Chocolate Coconut Macaroons

Reviewed: Mar. 28, 2014
I agree with some of the above reviews, that it seems to have a bit too much liquid, also it's a bit too sweet for my taste. So I think that adding a bit extra of oats should take care of both of those things.
